At Macnica Mpression booth at ET2015, we demonstrated the next generation high-speed serial interface (IF.HOTARU). This page provides an overview of the IF.HOTARU demo.
What is IF.HOTARU?
IF.HOTARU is a next-generation optical interface advocated by the HOTARU Interface Consortium, a standard organization consisting of multiple machine vision manufacturers in Japan. It is a protocol for data transmission using a high-speed serial transceiver, and assuming high-speed, long-distance transmission applications, it can be easily combined with an optical cable/connector to realize an optical interface between devices. It also enables transmission via metal cables for short-distance applications.

Overview
Images from the camera installed above Macnica Mpression booth are transmitted via an approximately 20 m long optical cable (IF.HOTARU interface) at an effective rate of over 2 Gbps. Then, after being optically/electrically converted by the Mpression AOC-F Interface card, it is converted from the IF.HOTARU interface to DVI by the Mpression Nitro board and HSMC DVI Digital Audio/Video daughter card, and sent to the display via the DVI cable. The camera image will be displayed.
Configuration of the demo
The configuration of the demo is as follows.
Altera's Cyclone V GX FPGA is implemented on the Mpression Nitro board used in this demo, and Mpression's IF.HOTARU IP core is implemented on the Cyclone V GX FPGA.
Products in use
Products used in this demo are:
| IF.HOTARU IP core for Altera | Mpression |
| Nitro - Cyclone V GX I/O Expansion Baseboard | Mpression |
| AOC-F Interface Card | Mpression |
| HSMC DVI Digital Audio/Video Daughter Card | Bitec |
Solutions provided by Macnica
By using Macnica Mpression's solutions, you can achieve long-distance, high-speed, and stable communication that was not possible with conventional metal cables.
IF.HOTARU's target transmission band is 3.125 to 160 Gbps, and is not limited to the factory automation field, but also surveillance cameras, medical equipment, and OA equipment. It can be used for electrical measurement equipment and other general-purpose video applications.
Macnica Mpression offers a wide range of technology solutions for Altera's FPGAs. If you require such a high-speed interface, please contact us.
