What is MF-Tokyo?

MF-Tokyo is one of Japan's largest exhibitions on plastic processing technology, hosted by the Japan Society for Technology of Plasticity and the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun. It brings together cutting-edge press processing, sheet metal, and forming technologies, and is garnering attention as a forum for technological exchange that will lead the next generation of manufacturing. This year's event was held at Tokyo Big Sight.

Introducing mold DX solutions using STREAL

At the YG Solutions booth, they exhibited a mold sensor system that combines their proprietary soft sensing technology with Macnica 's STREAL, leveraging their extensive experience and know-how in the field of plastic processing. This system aims to improve the lifespan of molds by converting stress loads into data, and in addition to providing the sensor technology, Macnica is also providing technical support for prototype evaluation.

System configuration

This system is configured so that strain sensors are attached to the surface of the mold and transmit digital signals using a dedicated wireless transmitter. The transmitted data is then sent to a PC equipped with dedicated receiving and data processing software.

The receiving software is equipped with a monitoring screen that displays the digital signals acquired from the strain sensor as time-series data in a graph, with ① strain (unit: με) on the vertical axis and ② temperature (℃) on the horizontal axis, and time on the horizontal axis. This makes it possible to visualize strain behavior in real time.

On the other hand, the data processing software is equipped with the following functions:

Waveform extraction function: Data is read point by point from intermittent measured values without using a physical trigger signal, and the rise and fall of the waveform is determined using a unique algorithm to extract the waveform during molding.

Amplitude calculation and history recording function: The amplitude is calculated from the maximum and minimum values of the extracted waveform, and this value is recorded as the strain history that the mold received during each molding (shot).By using a unique algorithm to determine the start and end of molding without using a physical trigger such as a proximity sensor, it is possible to record and analyze strain behavior with high precision using a minimal configuration.

Furthermore, just like a healthcare system that digitizes, stores, and analyzes daily movements such as blood pressure and number of steps taken by humans, by continuously recording and creating a database of the strain history that molds are subjected to on a daily basis, it becomes possible to analyze trends, leading to mold life predictions and optimization of design and molding conditions.

*Left side (orange frame): GUI screen of the receiving software. (This is the monitoring screen for actual measurement values.)
*Right side (blue frame): GUI screen of the data processing software. (This screen shows a scatter diagram plotting the waveform during molding and the strain history* 1 for each shot count.)
* 1: The ABS (maximum value-minimum value) = amplitude value of the cut waveform is assumed to be the distortion value received by each shot.

Features of STREAL

STREAL 's compact size and high accuracy are also utilized in areas where conventional sensors have difficulty being mounted in small spaces, and where interference and high-precision strain data can be acquired and applied.

Summary

YG Solutions is continuing to evaluate this demo machine with a view to commercialization, accelerating efforts to apply it to smart molds. Going forward, they plan to study the optimal device configuration that combines soft sensing technology and strain sensor data in preparation for mass production. STREAL will continue to aim for further evolution as a core technology that supports "visualization" at the site of smart molds and Digital Manufacturing. Please continue to look forward to the possibilities of YG Solutions' mold DX solutions and STREAL!
