Since certification for Bluetooth products is difficult to understand, I will explain it in three parts.
The first is about the type of authentication.
The rules are set by the Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group), which has jurisdiction over Bluetooth.
Types of authentication related to Bluetooth
No. 1 is the necessary application for customers who incorporate the Bluetooth module and put the final product on the market. Complete online application, no test required. Formerly known as EPL (End Product Listing) registration, it is now called Quallification.
No.2 is certification mainly done by Bluetooth module vendors. Unlike No.1, tests are required according to the supported Bluetooth Core Version and functions. For example, Microchip's BM83 is a Bluetooth 5.0 certified module, but it has acquired No.2 certification.
Regarding No.3, certification is not required for sales and distribution of Bluetooth products that have already been registered as No.1. However, please note that new product registration will be required when rebranding another company's product that has already been registered as your own brand.
No. | Main target | Authentication method | Formal name |
1 | Customers developing Bluetooth products | Certification required (no test required) | Qualification Process with No Required Testing |
2 | Bluetooth chip/module vendor | Certification (test required) | Qualification Process with Required Testing |
3 | Sales company/agency | no authentication required | ー |
