It was hot, hot!

This year's JANOG (JApan Network Operators' Group) 54 Meeting in Nara was held at the Nara Prefectural Convention Center, about a five-minute bus ride from Nara Station.
The weather was rainy and a little cool until the day before the event, but it cleared up in time for the event, and the temperature rose to nearly 35 degrees on the first day. The venue was filled with excitement as visitors waited for the doors to open, creating an atmosphere that reminded me of school festivals when I was a student. This time, the number of visitors was 3,249, which seems to have broken the previous record.

In this article, we will introduce some details about the Company exhibit, the lectures, and the very popular social gathering.

Optical Transceiver Module

At this booth, we had the opportunity to see a demonstration of long-distance transmission using Coherent's new product, the optical transceiver module "100G-ZR QSFP28 DCO," which once again attracted a lot of interest. The visitors saw how the DSP developed by Coherent allows for low power consumption and error-free transmission over 80km without an optical amplifier, and many reacted in amazement to the fact that the power consumption was only 5W. At the previous JANOG, we were only introducing samples, but now that the product has been released, we were able to have more specific discussions with customers.

Network for generative AI

We have explained the network configuration required in the generation AI era. The key to maximizing the performance of generative AI is that the network that connects the large number of GPU servers that perform parallel distributed processing is high-speed, low-latency, and lossless. ``NVIDIA Spectrum-X'' for generative AI consists of the ``NVIDIA Spectrum-4'' switch with a maximum port speed of 800 Gb/s and the accelerator ``NVIDIA BlueField-3DPU'' installed on the server side that supports up to 400 Gb/s. The theme of this BoF presentation is "Digital Coherent Communication"

This time, Abeno gave a solo lecture from the Company. The title of the lecture was "Considering the digital coherent method often heard in long-distance, large-capacity communications." He talked about the deep technology that could only be discussed at JANOG.
Digital coherent technology is perceived as more complicated than conventional NRZ and PAM4 technology, but in this article we will explain in an easy-to-understand manner using diagrams and no mathematical formulas what digital coherent technology is and why it is suitable for long-distance and high-capacity communications.

Tickets are in high demand! A very popular social gathering

This time too, tickets sold out in a few hours, and unfortunately there are probably many people who were unable to get tickets. This time, the event was held at the Hotel Nikko Nara, and about 800 people gathered. This was the perfect JANOG social gathering, with local Nara sake served in large barrels and sumptuous meat and sashimi on offer. Over delicious food and drinks, it was a valuable opportunity to talk with people I wasn't able to meet at the booth and people I met for the first time at JANOG.

The next JANOG55 will be held in Kyoto

People who I usually interact with online came to our booth saying, "I came to see you!", and I also had the opportunity to talk to them. I felt that this kind of direct interaction is a unique atmosphere at JANOG. The next JANOG will be held at Miyako Messe in Kyoto from January 22nd to 24th, 2025. the Company plan to put even more energy into exhibits and lectures. We look forward to seeing you all there.
