[Long-awaited release] 100G ZR DCO has been announced by Coherent!

Coherent has previously released 400G ZR/ZR+ products, which we have introduced in past JANOG articles. This time, they have announced that they will be releasing a new 100G ZR DCO product line in the summer of 2024. In this article, we will introduce the three features of these products.

Coherent 100G ZR (QSFP28-DCO)

Three features of 100G ZR DCO

  1. The transition from 10G to 100G in long-distance transmission is smooth.
  2. Transmission distances of up to 80km are possible without an optical amplifier, creating a simple and robust network.
  3. Contributing to building sustainable networks with low power consumption

1. Smooth transition from 10G to 100G in long-distance transmission

Currently, long-distance optical transmission networks are configured with 10G, but how long can they withstand the ever-increasing traffic? Also, if you want to upgrade but are worried that QSFP-DD (400G) is over-specified and has high initial investment costs, we have good news for you.

With this product, even if it does not support QSFP-DD, you can migrate to 100G with QSFP28 and achieve long-distance transmission and communication!

2. Transmission distances of up to 80 km are possible without the need for optical amplifiers, enabling a simple yet robust network

When constructing a long-distance network using dark fiber with high transmission loss, are you using an optical amplifier to communicate with the directly opposing optical transceiver module?

This product achieves a transmission distance of 80km without the need for optical amplifiers, making network configuration simpler.

3. Contributes to the creation of sustainable networks with low power consumption

Power consumption within data centers is increasing as traffic increases and equipment is strengthened. I'm sure there are many people who want to build a stable network while also reducing power consumption.

With this product, you can realize an eco-friendly and sustainable network with extremely low power consumption of Typical 5W/Max 5.5W (※) thanks to the DSP developed by Coherent!

(*) Power consumption varies depending on model number

Equipped with a function to automate wavelength settings

In addition to the three features above, the Flextune™ function cannot be overlooked. When building a WDM network, there is no need to configure wavelength settings from the network device anymore!

Wavelength setting is completed automatically using the Flextune™ function. (Spacing can be registered and set to 50G/100GHz)

This function, which is available in some 10G products, is also planned for inclusion in the 100G ZR DCO.

Fortunately, because it is equipped with a tunable laser, one model number covers multiple wavelengths. This frees you from having to manage inventory for each wavelength, which also reduces inventory risk.

The Flextune™ function is explained in an easy-to-understand comic video and article: What is Flextune™, Coherent's proprietary function that automates wavelength setting?

We are also planning to release high power versions such as the 400G ZR/ZR+, and we have a wide range of products to meet your needs, so please feel free to contact us.

Check out the video of the demonstration held at "JANOG53"

At the event "JANOG53" held from January 17 to 19, 2024, we demonstrated how Coherent's 100G ZR QSFP28-DCO can actually transmit over 80 km and how far it can transmit over long distances. If you were unable to attend JANOG or would like to see it again, please see the overview in the video below.
