Miniaturization and noise suppression are important issues in power supply design. Analog Devices' μ Module series, which contributes to miniaturization, and the Silent Switcher series, which achieves low EMI, are used by many engineers. However, some people may have felt that while μ Module is convenient and easy to use, it would be nice if there was a lineup with slightly improved noise performance.
In fact, power supply modules that combine the features of μ Module and Silent Switcher are already available. Here we introduce the power supply modules "LTM8060" and "LTM8060F", which also comes with EMI shielding.
The popular μModule product "LTM8060" with Silent Switcher
The μ Module is a proprietary solution from Analog Devices that integrates high-precision analog ICs and peripheral circuits into a single package. Its compact size, high efficiency, and high precision contribute to reducing the number of components and improving design efficiency.

Introducing the LTM8060F with EMI shielding
In applications that handle minute signals, such as wireless systems and medical imaging equipment, noise from power supply ICs can affect accuracy, and developers of these applications are calling for further noise suppression.
In response to these market demands, the EMI-shielded "LTM8060F" has been released. While maintaining the high basic performance of the LTM8060, EMI shielding has been added at the package level, which has succeeded in further reducing electric field noise and magnetic field noise.

LTM8060F – LTM8060 with added EMI shielding for even lower noise
The LTM8060F adds conformal shielding to the LTM8060. By covering the top and sides of the package with conductive material, it is possible to effectively contain the electric and magnetic field noise radiated from the IC.
It is also ideal for applications that are susceptible to noise, as it can suppress noise interference from the power supply IC to surrounding circuits.
What are the benefits of package-level EMI shielding?
In the past, the most common way to suppress the effects of noise emitted by power supply ICs was to shield the entire board on which the chip is mounted with metal. However, shielding the entire board requires additional board space, which has the disadvantage of increasing weight and cost.
On the other hand, shielding at the package level requires minimal space and reduces weight and cost. By shielding only the switching regulator, which is the main source of noise, noise can be effectively reduced.
Significantly reduces magnetic and electric field noise
The following figures show the results of measuring near-field magnetic and electric field noise for the LTM8060 and LTM8060F. Near-field noise measurements are useful for identifying noise sources during the development stage. Measurements performed in inspections before product shipment measure the radiated noise of the entire board from the far field, and are not able to identify the source in detail.
The near-field measurement graph reveals the following:
- The LTM8060F suppresses magnetic field noise (between 1MHz and 1GHz) by approximately 10dB compared to the LTM8060.
- The LTM8060F cuts electric field noise (between 1MHz and 1GHz) by almost 100%.
The LTM8060 is also a low-noise power module that uses Silent Switcher technology, but the LTM8060F, which adds EMI shielding at the package level, further suppresses noise. This significantly reduces the noise impact on surrounding circuits, allowing it to be used with confidence in applications with strict EMI requirements.
Suppresses switching noise radiation
The graph below shows the switching noise of the LTM8060 and LTM8060F measured using an oscilloscope.
With the LTM8060, switching noise radiated at a constant rate appears as a waveform. On the other hand, with the LTM8060F, no switching noise waveform is visible. This means that the EMI shielding added to the LTM8060F is containing the switching noise. These measurement results also confirm the excellent EMI characteristics of the LTM8060F.
This time, we introduced the LTM8060, which uses Silent Switcher technology, and its EMI-shielded derivative, the LTM8060F, from Analog Devices' μModule products. Both combine the compact and convenient μModule with the low-noise Silent Switcher technology, making them ideal for noise-sensitive applications. The LTM8060F, which adds EMI shielding at the package level, achieves even greater noise reduction. If you need to meet strict EMI requirements or are limited by board space, we recommend giving it a try.
