What is NFC?
First, let's take a look at an overview of NFC, its benefits, and NXP's track record.
■ A contactless, short-range wireless communication standard based on wireless communication within a distance of 10 cm
■ Advantages of NFC technology
Communication is possible by bringing the device into close proximity with a contactless IC device.
NFC tag devices can also operate using power supplied from the NFC reader device.
Since the distance is within 10 cm, there is little risk of data leakage and secure communication is possible.
It also supports encryption authentication.
■ NXP's NFC track record
- We have been supplying billions of ICs for over 20 years. We have a long history of sales and extensive experience.
- NXP is a core member of the NFC Forum and holds key fundamental patents and a wealth of technological expertise.
NFC Selection Chart
Next is a flowchart for selecting NXP's NFC products. You can select the optimal device family based on the required method and features.
・NFC front end: Requires control by an external microcontroller
・NFC controller: Equipped with a microcontroller function inside, it is possible to implement NFC functions on a single chip

Click here to see the NXP PN7160 product introduction.
PN7160 Benefits
The firmware for NFC communication is already written, so users do not need to design software.
- Linux and Android drivers available for OS applications
- NCI 2.0 compliant protocol included (host side example design also included)
Supports all NFC Forum modes
- Reader/Writer Mode: ISO/IEC A&B, FeliCa, MIFARE 1K, 4K, NFC Forum Type 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ISO/IEC 15693
- Peer-to-peer modes: passive and active, initiator and target
- Card emulation modes: NFC Forum Type 3 and Type 4 (A and B)
Delivering the best performance and easy interoperability with other NFC devices
- Limited settings to change: discovery mechanism, power state, antenna settings, mode configuration
PN7160 enables various NFC connections with minimal development effort.
It can be achieved with the best performance
Perfect for your first NFC system!
Development Kit for PN7160
NXP offers a development kit for rapid development of the PN7160.
OM27160: Development Kits for PN7160 Plug’n Play NFC Controller
This is a development kit that combines an NFC controller board and an interface board.
The implemented PN7160 already has firmware for NFC communication written into it (this cannot be changed by the user), so operation can be verified immediately without the need for software development.
Please note that the model number differs depending on the combination of the NFC controller board and interface board.
・Is the NFC controller board interface I2C or SPI?
- Will an interface board be included?
There are two types of MCU/MPU boards that control the OM27160:
・LPC82X / LPC55S6x (LPC family)
- i.MX RT1170 (i.MX RT family)
Example design firmware is provided for these boards.
This sample design is distributed as an SDK that can run on MCUXpresso.
