Microchip Single Pair Ethernet Product Overview
Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) is the next generation Ethernet standard that uses a unique physical layer (PHY) transceiver over a single pair of wires.
SPE was originally developed as a technology for automobile networks, but it is now attracting attention for use in industrial equipment due to its power-saving and easy-to-use features.
SPE reduces system cost, weight and wiring complexity compared to traditional Ethernet multi-pair CAT5 cabling.
OSI network layers 2 through 7 remain the same across all Ethernet physical layer types, eliminating the need for additional software modifications to implement SPE.
SPE is standardized in IEEE802.3 Std, and Microchip has released products that comply with IEEE802.3cg (10BASE-T1S) / IEEE802.3bw (100BASE-T1).
