Benefits of Capacitive Isolation

In this article the other day, I introduced six benefits of capacitive isolation.

  1. Low deterioration over time and long service life
  2. High breakdown field value
  3. High Common Mode Transient Voltage (CMTI)
  4. Because the propagation delay time is short,
  5. Wide operating temperature range
  6. The structure of the insulation part is a two-chip structure, so even if it is destroyed, the possibility of shorting the input and output is low.


This article describes the IGBT gate driver ISO5452 from Texas Instruments (hereafter TI) that uses this capacitive isolation.

Features of ISO5452

The ISO5452 is a 5.7kVRMS, reinforced isolated gate driver for IGBTs and MOSFETs with split outputs OUTH and OUTL capable of sourcing 2.5A and sinking 5A. The input side operates from a single 2.25V to 5.5V supply. The output side can supply power as low as 15V and as high as 30V.

The main features of this product are the following three points.

  1. High insulation performance
  2. Short propagation delay time
  3. Safety and regulatory certifications

1. High insulation performance

  • High Common Mode Transient Immunity (CMTI)
    50kV/μs (Min), 100kV/μs (Typ), (VCM = 1500V)
  • Comparative Tracking Index (CTI)
    Material Group I because CTI is >600V. The creepage distance can be reduced for each degree of pollution.

2. Short propagation delay time

Shorter pulses can be input because the propagation delay time from input to output is short and the variation is small. As a result, high-side and low-side IGBTs and dead time can be shortened, and efficiency can be improved.

  • Propagation Delay: 76ns (typ), 110ns (max)

3. Safety and regulatory certifications

This product has certifications in compliance with various safety standards.

  • Reinforced isolation according to DIN VVDE V 0884-10 (VDE V 0884-10):2006-12 for 8000 VPK VIOTM and 1420 VPK VIORM
  • 1 minute isolation at 5700 VRMS per UL1577
  • CSA Component Acceptance Notice 5A, IEC60950-1 and IEC60601-1 End Equipment Standards

Isolated gate driver evaluation module

In addition to the ISO5452, this time we will introduce an isolated gate driver that uses capacitive isolation.

ISO5852SEVM

This evaluation module features the ISO5852S reinforced isolated gate driver device and measures the AC and DC performance of the device using a pre-mounted 1-nF load or a user-mounted IGBT in either a TO-247 or TO-220 package. can be evaluated.

ISO7842-EVM

The ISO7842-EVM supports the evaluation of TI quad-channel digital isolators in a 16-pin SOIC package for rapid development and analysis of isolated systems.

UCC5320SCEVM-058

The UCC5320SCEVM is for evaluating the UCC53xx family of devices suitable for motor drives and industrial power supplies. Evaluation board with flexibility of driver settings for split output, Miller clamp or UVLO depending on the device.

The EVM also has enough test points and jumper options to evaluate the device with minimal external components.

Reference design

Here, we introduce three "reference designs" that can be applied to the final product. This reference design is provided free of charge by TI, so please use it.
