New standard for smart home starts
In recent years, products compatible with smart homes have become popular in households.It is expected that more smart home compatible products will be released from various vendors in the future.The Connectivity Standard Alliance (CSA) is formulating a new standard for smart homes, "Matter," with the aim of ensuring that they are highly compatible and that users can use them comfortably.
Infineon has joined the CSA as a promoter and is working with other leading smart home manufacturers to promote the Matter standard.
What do I need to do to be Matter compliant?
Matter can be implemented in various smart home IoT devices such as smart speakers, lighting, door locks, and air conditioners. When actually incorporating Matter into a device, the following five components are considered.
Infineon has a product line-up of all five components and is able to provide a consistent product from software to hardware. The following sections describe these five components.
- MCU (Low Power MCU, Human-Machine Interface)
- Connectivity (Wi-Fi, Thread, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE))
- Security (Trust Zone)
- Peripheral (Memory, Device Protection, Sensing & Control)
- SDK (Matter Stack)
1. MCU (Low Power MCU, Human-Machine Interface)
The Matter standard is primarily designed around the Internet Protocol (IP). It enables IP-based communication between smart home devices - mobile apps - cloud services.Matter's protocol stack (hereinafter referred to as Matter Stack) is currently being standardized by CSA and is scheduled to be released on GitHub.
MCUs that implement the Matter Stack are required to have low power consumption drive and high compatibility with connectivity devices. Infineon's MCUs have industry-leading ultra-low power consumption and high design flexibility, making them ideal for IoT devices. The provided SDKalso includes the driver software for the company's Connectivity Device, which contributes to shortening the customer's development period.
2. Connectivity (Wi-Fi, Thread, BLE)

3. Security (Trust Zone)
One of the requirements for smart home devices is strong security. Matter uses Device Authentication Certificates (DAC) to identify device IDs, authenticate connections, and encrypt communications.
Infineon leads CSA's primary security team and provides solutions to our customers as security experts. One such solution is the secure storage of device authentication certificates (DACs). Hardware-based security provides strong resistance to both physical and logical attacksRealize.
Furthermore, as Macnica solution, we can introduce certification authorities that issue DACs.
4. Peripheral (Memory, Device Protection, Sensing & Control)
IoT devices are equipped with various peripherals depending on their usage.
Infineon's product lineup also includes Device Protection ICs such as ESD protection and battery authentication, Sensing & Control ICs such as 3D magnetic sensors and motor drivers, and Memory ICs.
5. SDK (Matter Stack)
Infineon provides ModusToolbox™ as an implementation environment for Matter Stack. ModusToolbox™ is an integrated development environment that covers applications from Infineon MCUs, wireless ICs (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)), and cloud connection systems.
