High-performance yet easy-to-use A/D converters: Analog Devices' AD4080 family

When selecting a device to replace an A/D converter, it is important to check not only analog characteristics such as the required number of bits, accuracy (ENOB/SNR), and matching of input bandwidth and sampling speed, but also the interface and power consumption when connecting to devices that perform digital processing such as FPGAs.

While it is important to compare the parameters of the A/D converter when selecting a device, it is also necessary to check and select a device that takes into consideration ease of design, including the analog front end.

In this article, we will introduce the AD4080 family of SAR A/D converters from Analog Devices, which offer high performance while also taking ease of design into consideration.

AD4080

The AD4080 series achieves high accuracy, high speed, and low noise on a single chip

The AD4080 family of A/D converters achieves high accuracy, high speed, and low noise on a single chip while also simplifying implementation and reducing power consumption. This 20/16/14-bit, 40/20/10 MSPS high-speed SAR ADC is housed in a 5mm x 5mm BGA package, making it ideal for applications requiring high-accuracy, high-speed data acquisition, simplified signal chains, reduced component count, and easier board design.

AD4080 Family Features

The features of the AD4080 family are summarized below.

Features

Overview

Low noise

Very low noise spectral density (8.8nV/√Hz) and 93.5 dBFS SNR at 1MHz input frequency

High-speed sampling rate

Supports sampling rates up to 40 MSPS for accurate digitization of wideband signals, while low latency (46.25 ns) makes it ideal for high-speed digital control loops

Low power consumption

80mW@40MSPS

High integration and noise countermeasures

The built-in power supply decoupling capacitor, which is important for noise prevention, also reduces the overall BOM.

Block Diagram

The AD4080 family block diagram is shown in Figure 1.

The EasyDrive™ input provides linear input current and reduced kickback, while the zero-drift, highly stable reference buffer, programmable offset/gain correction, and digital filtering enable precision analog circuitry.

The integrated configurable digital filter path, FIFO (16K), user-configurable GPIO and serial interface (SPI/LVDS) provide flexible digital interfaces.

EasyDrive™ Simplifies Analog Front-End Design

The AD4080 family simplifies analog front-end design with its EasyDrive™ feature.

With a typical A/D converter, a large load is placed on the input circuit at the moment of sampling, causing a temporary large drop in the voltage of the input signal, as shown in the blue waveform in Figure 2. On the other hand, with an A/D converter equipped with EasyDrive™, the voltage drop during sampling is kept very small, as shown in the red waveform in Figure 2.

As a result, EasyDrive™ minimizes input load fluctuations at the sampling instant and significantly eases the requirements for the ADC driver circuit, such as bandwidth, settling characteristics, output impedance, etc. For constant setting and calculation methods, please refer to the AD4080 data sheet or use the Signal Chain Designer, an online design tool provided free of charge by Analog Devices.
