"Ultrasonic Lens Cleaning (ULC)" is a new technology that realizes automatic cleaning of camera lenses.

Cameras and sensors have been increasingly adopted in a variety of applications in recent years, including automobiles, traffic cameras, smart cities and smart manufacturing.
In the past, when the lens of a camera or sensor became dirty, it was common to clean it manually. Challenges with these methods include the need to interrupt system use during cleaning and the risk of damaging various mechanical components due to incorrect cleaning methods.
Against this background, demand for self-cleaning cameras and sensors is increasing.

These challenges can be solved by using a new specialized semiconductor featuring ultrasonic lens cleaning (ULC) technology from Texas Instruments (TI).
By adopting this product, it is possible to quickly and automatically detect dust, ice, frost, water, etc. adhering to the lens, and remove them using minute vibrations.

Overview of ULC

The ULC consists of two chips: a digital signal processor "ULC1001" and a piezo driver "DRV2901".
By applying voltage to the piezo element and causing it to vibrate, it is possible to quickly remove deposits from the lens surface. *Piezo element must be installed separately.
The small form factor allows the PCB footprint to be less than 25mm x 15mm. This makes it possible to solve lens cleaning challenges in a variety of applications, including small cameras and sensors installed in a variety of environments.
