[Curved surface or wood] Any material or shape can be a switch! ? Introduction of capacitive touch sensor

In this article, we will introduce the capacitive touch sensor manufactured by Elephantech, starting with the principle and features. We will also introduce a capacitive touch remote control, which is an application example that makes use of its unique features.

This is a recommended article for those who are in trouble with this!

  • I want to make a switch with an elaborate design that solves the problem of being ugly and uncool!
  • I want to make an embedded switch that can withstand getting wet!
  • I want to make a switch with originality!

First, an introduction to the principle of capacitive touch sensors

A capacitive touch sensor is a method of detecting a touch based on the slight change in capacitance that occurs when a finger (panel, sheet) touches. There are two types of capacitance methods: the self-capacitance method and the mutual capacitance method.

Self-capacitance method

The self-capacitance method uses electrodes that can generate an electric field. The principle is that when the hand is brought closer, a pseudo capacitor is generated between the electric field and the hand, and the touch is detected at the timing when the capacitance increases.

Mutual capacitance method

The mutual capacitance method uses two electrodes, one for transmission and one for reception. One can generate an electric field and the other absorbs the electric lines of force, creating a pseudo-capacitor between the two electrodes. The principle is that when the hand is brought closer, a pseudo capacitor is generated between the electric field and the hand, and the touch is detected at the timing when the capacitance decreases.

Elephantech Co., Ltd. Capacitive touch sensor sheet

Introducing Elephantech's capacitive touch sensor sheet. Elephantech's capacitive touch sensor sheets can be used in either self-capacitance or mutual-capacitance, depending on the customer's design. Using the characteristics of the flexible substrate P-Flex® PET, it is possible to create any shape and design. In addition, by printing a transparent conductive ink (PEDOT:PSS) and a transparent resist on a transparent PET base material, it is possible to transmit parts other than the copper wiring. By embedding an LED under a transparent electrostatic touch sensor, it is possible to create a light transmission type touch sensor, so it is suitable for applications such as touch switches that emphasize thinness and design. This time, we are creating PoC using a more sensitive self-capacitance method.

Features

  • In addition to flat surfaces, it is also possible to design curved surfaces that take advantage of its flexibility.
  • By using a transparent resist, transmission other than wiring is possible
  • Can be embedded without compromising the design of the housing
  • By mounting an LED, it is possible to create a flexible light transmission touch sensor.
  • Contribution to replacement of physical switches
  • Compatible with contactless sensors

I made a capacitive touch remote control!

As an example of using Elephantech's capacitive touch sensor sheet, it can be applied to a touch-type remote controller. This time, I made a touch remote controller by combining a learning infrared remote controller and an electrostatic touch sheet. A cover made of various materials can be attached to the electrostatic touch sheet, and the learning remote control can be operated by touching the cover. By applying this technology, it is possible to embed an electrostatic touch sheet under a variety of materials, realizing a discreet smart remote control.

main parts

  • MSP430FR2676 microcontroller (infrared learning remote control)
  • Elephantech electrostatic touch sheet

Product Specifications

  • Televisions, fans, DVD players, etc. can be controlled by a learning type infrared remote control.
  • Material-free: Touch switches can be made of materials such as gypsum board, glass, marble, and wood. It is possible to realize a remote control that can be embedded in various places
  • Electrostatic sensitivity can be adjusted according to the material

Use your own ideas to turn curved surfaces into touch remote controls!

Another feature of Elephantech's capacitive touch sensor sheet is its ability to handle curved surfaces with a flexible substrate. The image below is an example of technology application. By attaching an electrostatic touch sheet to the inner surface of the cola PET bottle, it can be used as a learning remote control that touches the surface of the bottle without being affected by the curved surface of the PET bottle. will be In other words, if you embed an electrostatic touch sheet in various things, it will transform into a completely new and unique touch remote control!
