Features of the LTC7821
The LTC7821 is a high efficiency DC/DC converter from Analog Devices, Inc. The LTC7821 operates over a wide input voltage range of 10V to 72V (80V absolute maximum) and can control currents in the tens of amps and output voltages from 0.9V to 33.5V with external components. The LTC7821 is the industry's first hybrid step-down synchronous controller that integrates a switched capacitor circuit with a step-down synchronous controller.
It has the following three major features.
1. Equipped with analog devices unique soft switch function
Soft switching reduces EMI and MOSFET strain.
2. Only 5mm x 5mm QFN package, small and space-saving
It is a small package with flexibility for implementation as an intermediate bus power supply.
3. High efficiency of 97% in the 240W class like no other
Ideal for considering a compact solution by making a 240W isolated power supply non-isolated.
Up to 50% smaller mounting area on board
Normally, to step down the voltage from 48V to the 1.2V or 3.3V used on the board, a two-step procedure is required: first step down to an intermediate potential such as 5 to 12V, and then step down to 1.2V or 3.3V. Therefore, the board size inevitably tends to increase.
However, the LTC7821 is a "hybrid step-down synchronous controller" that integrates a switched capacitor circuit and a step-down synchronous controller into one, and can step down to an intermediate potential and step down to 1.2V, 3.3V, etc. in one circuit, so it can be implemented easily. The area can be reduced by 50%.
Achieves high efficiency (97%) from high voltage 48V to 12V/20A
This is achieved by using a unique "hybrid step-down synchronous controller" to more than triple the switching frequency without sacrificing efficiency.
Improving efficiency not only reduces power loss, but also reduces heat generation due to power loss, which has the advantage of reducing the impact on peripheral circuits.
Furthermore, by increasing the switching frequency, the capacitors and inductance of peripheral components can also be made smaller, which can lead to further space savings.
Parallel connection for high power applications
Multiple LTC7821s can be connected in parallel to operate in a polyphase configuration, doubling the output current. This allows it to be used in high-power applications.
Application example
- intermediate bus converter
- High current power supply system
- Various systems for telecom (telecommunication), data communication, and storage
- 48V automotive system
