Technician (Semiconductor)

Zen Wakita

Joined as a new graduate in 2018. Belongs to the 2nd Applied Technology Department, 1st Technology Division, Ultima Company. As a field application engineer (FAE), he is in charge of the products of a major US semiconductor manufacturer, and provides technical support to customers of domestic electronic equipment manufacturers.

Masayuki Komiyama

Joined as a new graduate in 2011. Belongs to the 1st Department of the 1st Technology Section of the Texter Company. For more than 10 years, he was in charge of the products of a German semiconductor manufacturer, and engaged in technical proposals and technical inquiries for customers of domestic industrial and consumer equipment manufacturers. From 2022, he will also focus on management work as a deputy manager.

Yuusuke Yasuda

Joined as a new graduate in 2007. Belongs to the 2nd Technology Department of the 2nd Technology Section of the Kravis Company. Since joining the company, he has consistently engaged in FAE work for 15 years. Currently, as a general manager, he manages a team in charge of major US semiconductor manufacturers and venture companies, while also performing a wide range of tasks such as sales promotion activities for cutting-edge products and technical QA support for existing customers.

Chapter 1Attractiveness of FAE Beyond Technology

Yasuda

I heard that when you were a university student, you studied a field completely different from semiconductors, so could you tell me why you decided to join Macnica?

Wakita

I majored in chemistry at university. As a result, my typical job prospects were research and development or production management positions at chemical manufacturers, but most of these positions involved being confined to factories or pipelines, and little interaction with people. While I was job hunting with the idea in mind of "I want to work in a technical position, but also in a position that gives me the opportunity to interact with customers," I came across Macnica 's position as a field application engineer (FAE), and thought, "This is exactly what I want to do!" That's why I joined the company.

Komiyama

It is true that Macnica 's FAE is a position that has some sales-like aspects, such as having direct technical interaction with customers and visiting customer sites together with sales staff to make product proposals.

Yasuda

I agree. I still remember how difficult it was for my friends to understand what I was doing at FAE after I joined the company. He asked me, "Isn't Yasuda's job a sales job?", so I answered, "I'm a technician," but he said, "Why are you out of the office even though you're a technician?" (laughs)

Wakita

Sure, it can be a little confusing for many. When I actually work, I often work in collaboration not only with customers but also with other members of the company. .

Yasuda

that's right! By the way, why did Mr. Komiyama join Macnica?

Komiyama

Actually, when I started job hunting, I was thinking about getting a job at a manufacturer. However, when I attended Macnica information session, I was told about the work of an FAE, and I realized that I would rather be exposed to various cutting-edge technologies and disseminate them, rather than pursuing the same technology over and over again at a manufacturer. I felt that it was a good fit, and that's what got me interested in Macnica.

Yasuda

Macnica does business with many overseas suppliers, so we don't specialize in a specific technology, and we have the opportunity to work on a wide range of technologies. What made you decide to join the company?

Komiyama

The deciding factor for me was the people at Macnica. All of the employees at Macnica are cheerful and lively, which was very appealing to me. I was drawn to the way they talked about their work with such vigor that I honestly thought, "I want to be like that!"

Wakita

I totally understand! The senior Macnica employees I met during the selection process were so "sparkling"! Macnica employees are full of inner charm that comes from their confidence in themselves and their pride as Macnica people!

Komiyama

Mr. Yasuda, why did you join Macnica?

Yasuda

When I was in high school, I did a homestay abroad, but I was disappointed because I couldn't speak English at all. So, in the future, I decided to jump into an environment where I could improve my language skills while working globally.

Wakita

It is true that most of the suppliers that Macnica does business with are overseas manufacturers. I think Macnica is a perfect company based on the ``global'' axis, as communication with supplier manufacturers and product documentation are often in English.

Chapter 2A Pinch Is a Chance to Win Trust

Yasuda

What do you think is the most rewarding part of Macnica 's FAE?

Wakita

I think this is where I can directly help customers. Customers cannot successfully proceed with design and development of the semiconductor products provided by Macnica simply by delivering them, so we must respond to a huge number of inquiries. As an engineer, I feel fulfilled when I provide appropriate technical information and when a customer's design and development progresses smoothly.

Komiyama

Me too. Dealing with defects is particularly difficult, but it makes me happy as an engineer to receive words of appreciation from customers after solving problems.

Yasuda

This is unique to an FAE who interacts directly with customers. I believe that troubleshooting is an opportunity to win the trust of customers. When a problem occurs, there is a high degree of urgency and a prompt and careful response is required, but if we respond sincerely, customers will recognize Macnica as a true partner.

Wakita

This is exactly what Macnica 's core value is, ``Turn a crisis into an opportunity!''

Komiyama

One of the great things about Macnica is that we have a lot of colleagues who are willing to help us get through tough times. A few years ago, when we had a major problem, we had a conference call with a customer that went on into the middle of the night to try to resolve the issue. I was physically and mentally exhausted after dealing with the situation for so long, but my boss at the time rushed over from a business trip to support me until the problem was resolved. After we'd struggled to resolve the issue, my boss took me out for some ramen, and I'll never forget the taste of it (laughs).

Wakita

Macnica is a company where the bosses don't run away. Because we see that, we've also developed a mindset of not running away.

Komiyama

That's exactly right. Also, it's rewarding when our proposal hits the customer and they decide to hire us!

Yasuda

It's really nice to be able to team up with sales to visit customers and propose products that meet their needs.

Wakita

It is necessary to provide technical support for a long period of time until the customer decides to use the product we proposed and mass-produces the equipment. Isn't it! You can truly feel that you have contributed to society.

Chapter 2Each Person Makes a Difference

Komiyama

FAEs interact directly with customers, so of course communication skills are also required, but as engineers, there are many people who are particular about "sharpening their technical skills."

Yasuda

All the employees work with pride, saying, "I'm a specialist in this field!"

Wakita

My future goal is to become an expert like you. I would like to develop myself as a valuable engineer in the market by acquiring technical skills that are competitive with our customers and suppliers.

Yasuda

That's wonderful! Macnica is known as a technology trading company because we, the engineers, are able to provide high-quality technical support. Macnica has grown to this size thanks to the added value of its technological capabilities, so I want to take over what my senior employees have built up to now and provide customers with an even higher level of support than ever before.

Komiyama

It's inspiring for mid-career employees like us to see young employees like Mr. Wakita have such passion! Macnica 's semiconductor business is currently producing remarkable results in both sales and profits, but the young employees in my department are not content with the status quo and are taking on various challenges. When I heard one of my juniors say, ``Just because it's selling well now doesn't mean it's okay to stay the way it is,'' I was once again humbled.

Yasuda

You can't create something new by maintaining the status quo. I don't know what will happen in the future even if it's good now. It's important to realize that each and every one of us can make a difference.

Komiyama

You are right. In that sense, Mr. Yasuda, is there anything you would like to change in the future?

Yasuda

Of course there is! Recently, Japanese manufacturers have been moving their manufacturing bases overseas to keep production costs down. If we continue to sell semiconductors alone, there will be cases where Macnica will not be able to participate in projects where manufacturing bases are overseas due to trade area restrictions.

Wakita

It is true that more and more domestic manufacturers are outsourcing hardware development and manufacturing to overseas subcontractors and trying to add value through software development.

Yasuda

In the future, I think Macnica 's semiconductor division will need to develop a business model that earns support fees and further increase sales of finished products and solutions.

Komiyama

This is an attempt to move Macnica closer to becoming a "Services & Solutions company," which is our company-wide goal!

Yasuda

Macnica has a department that specializes in launching new businesses, but we in the semiconductor division also want to make changes and build new businesses. Regardless of whether you are a young, mid-career, or veteran employee, let's work together as a team and strive toward high goals every day!
