Macnica and SENA begin demonstration of perovskite solar cells in the subtropical environment of Thailand - Utilizing the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) to promote their use in Southeast Asia -

Macnica (Head office: Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture; Representative Director and President: Kazumasa Kazumasa Hara; hereinafter Macnica") announced today that it has commenced the world's first*1 demonstration project for perovskite solar cells (hereinafter "PSC") in the subtropical environment of Thailand, in collaboration with SENA Green Energy Company Limited (Head office: Huai Khwang District, Bangkok, Thailand; Representative: Kesara Thanyarakpark; hereinafter "SENA"), a subsidiary of SENA Development Public Company Limited (Head office: Huai Khwang District, Bangkok, Thailand; Representative: Kesara Thanyarakpark), a major Thai developer.

About this demonstration project
This demonstration project is part of the Ministry of the Environment's FY2024 Joint Crediting Mechanism Funding Support Project for the Introduction of New Technologies, including Hydrogen. * 2 The project was selected by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and is currently being carried out for three years starting in fiscal year 2024. This project is being carried out under the guidance of Professor Tsutomu Miyasaka of Toin University of Yokohama, the inventor of PSC, with Macnica as the representative operator and SENA as a joint implementer. The specific roles and responsibilities in the demonstration are as follows:

Macnica: Development and provision of PSC for this demonstration. System construction and technical guidance for the demonstration environment. Performance monitoring, data collection and analysis.
SENA: Provision of a PSC demonstration environment in Thailand. Installation work in the demonstration environment. Performance monitoring.

◆ Purpose of this demonstration project
Due to their light, thin, and flexible properties, PSCs can be installed on building walls, where it was previously difficult to install solar panels, and are expected to significantly expand the area where solar power generation can be installed. However, because they are susceptible to heat, humidity, ultraviolet rays, etc., performance verification in a subtropical environment that is hot and humid throughout the year is required. In addition, there has been no record of PSCs being introduced in Thailand, and the lack of a system that complies with local electrical standards was also an issue to consider.
Therefore, this demonstration project will verify the suitability of PSCs in Thailand's high-temperature, humid environment. Furthermore, by establishing a consistent implementation system from local operation to maintenance and demonstrating their potential to contribute to continuous CO2 emission reductions, the project aims to promote the widespread adoption of PSCs in Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries.

About this demonstration project
In fiscal 2024, we focused on establishing the infrastructure to operate the PSC and demonstration environment system in Thailand, including conducting a survey of Thailand's electrical standards and completing the construction and operational verification of a system that complies with local standards. We also installed eight PSCs on the rooftops of homes owned by SENA in Thailand and conducted initial evaluations.
In fiscal year 2025, we will move forward with full-scale demonstrations and the establishment of an operational system. PSCs will be installed on all sides of the roofs and walls of homes owned by SENA in Thailand to verify their durability and power generation performance. In addition, by connecting the PSCs to IoT devices and monitoring output, we will also demonstrate the establishment of a maintenance system.

[Outline of this demonstration]
■Period: Mid-October 2025 to mid-February 2026
■ Location: Bangkok, Thailand
Demonstration overview:
① Approximately 60 PSC units with specifications for the Kingdom of Thailand will be installed on the roofs and walls of residential buildings to carry out the demonstration.
② Durability verification in a subtropical environment (high temperature, humidity, and high UV rays) and air pollution (PM2.5)
3) Construction of PSC electrical systems that comply with Thai electrical standards and verification of maintenance methods
4) Verification of an energy management system tailored to the electricity market environment in the Kingdom of Thailand

"SENA is a world Board Director in the digital transformation of our business," said Kesara Tanyarak-Park, CEO of SENA.
"Today, in collaboration with Macnica and with the support of the Japanese government, we are taking an important step towards a cleaner energy future by testing perovskite solar cell technology at the SENA Park Ville 2 clubhouse along Ramindra Outer Ring Road. This project will study the performance of perovskite solar cells in Thailand's subtropical climate, which is characterized by high temperature and humidity, strong ultraviolet rays, and PM2.5 dust, with the aim of developing durable PSC systems suitable for real-world use."

Atsushi Sato Executive Officer and General Manager Macnica Innovation Strategic Business Division Macnica Holdings, said:
"Together with SENA, we are conducting the world's first demonstration project in Thailand for Japanese-made perovskite solar cells. This technology is attracting a great deal of attention in Japan. By demonstrating perovskite solar cells under subtropical climate conditions, we aim to promote their spread from Thailand to Asia and around the world. This demonstration project is a memorable first step towards that goal, and we hope to widely popularize self-power generation and self-consumption using perovskite solar cells in the future."

Part of the demonstration project

*1: According to the Company research
*2: This project supports demonstration projects in JCM partner countries to promote the introduction of advanced decarbonization technologies that have not previously been part of JCM projects.
