In 2013, an international treaty, the Minamata Convention on Mercury, was agreed upon for the purpose of protecting human health and the environment from anthropogenic emissions and releases of mercury and mercury compounds. The Law Concerning the Prevention of Environmental Pollution by Mercury was enacted. As a result, the manufacture, export, and import of products that use mercury are regulated, and lighting manufacturers are required to end the production of mercury lamps and switch to LED lighting in various places.

Considering the safety of students and the reduction of CO2 emissions, Nagoya Otani High School introduced "ShinyU Light," which is expected to have a greater energy-saving effect than conventional LED lighting, to its outdoor grounds.

A total of 30 ShinyU LEDs were installed to illuminate the ground from the upper part of the school building, and the actual brightness was more than double that of the mercury lamps measured before installation, and more than 5 times more when viewed in the darkest place. This will contribute to student safety and crime prevention measures. In addition, compared to mercury lamps, the electricity cost for lighting can be reduced to about half, leading to a reduction in CO2 emissions, making it environmentally friendly.
