Combine Pulse Secure MAG with Gléas from your smartphone
Building an environment that allows safe and easy access to internal resources

POINT

  • Ensuring security without increasing user operations by utilizing electronic certificates
  • Reduce administrative burden with private CA Gléas with integrated MDM functionality
  • Adoption of Pulse Secure MAG, which can achieve high return on investment even in small-scale operations

WISEMAN Co., Ltd. develops, sells, and supports systems for medical institutions, nursing care and welfare facilities. In both fields, it is a system that keeps information on the medical history and daily life of users, and is developed and supported with a high level of security awareness.
Especially in the support after introduction, it is not uncommon for information about the actual operation to be received, so it is necessary to handle even one email sent to the sales representative with consideration for confidentiality. Therefore, when using smartphones to support sales representatives' activities outside the company, Juniper Networks' SSL-VPN product "Pulse Secure MAG Junos PulseGateway (hereinafter referred to as Pulse Secure MAG)" We have adopted JCCH, security solution systems's certificate authority product "Private CA Gléas" (hereinafter referred to as "Gléas") to ensure security.

Activating communication outside the company and accumulating smart device utilization know-how

Wiseman distributed notebook PCs and communication cards so that sales representatives could communicate outside the company. However, Shigeru Oshita Oshita of WISEMAN Co., Ltd. 's management division said that it was difficult to say that they were fully utilized.

"We were able to access the internal network from a laptop and use groupware to enable communication, but it was difficult to promote use outside the company. It took a long time to boot Windows and go online. Because of this, it was difficult to get people to casually use it for short periods of time while traveling.”

I also used mobile phone email, but I can't see attached files such as quotations here. There was a need to secure a means to enable high-density communication while being simple. Therefore, we focused on the introduction of smart devices, which are easier than laptops and more sophisticated than mobile phones.

“Interest in smart devices such as smartphones and tablets is increasing in medical institutions and nursing care facilities, and we must work on services for smart devices in the future. We need to master the use of devices, improve literacy, and accumulate know-how on how to use them.”

Mr. Koji Honda of WISEMAN Co., Ltd., Ltd. Welfare Business Headquarters explained the background to the introduction of smartphones. In this way, the creation of the remote access environment necessary to safely access internal resources from smartphones has started, eliminating the procedures and waiting times required for using a PC.

The combination of Gléas and Pulse Secure MAG gives you the security you need with less effort

In order to emphasize security, only company-issued smartphones are allowed to connect to the company. In addition, it was found that appropriate management was necessary, and the selection of products necessary for system construction began with MDM. However, Mr. Honda says that it was difficult to find the product he was looking for.
“After we started selecting products, we realized that most MDM products emphasized functional limitations rather than usability. Restrictions just make it less convenient to use, and I don't see much of an advantage."

While looking for a mechanism that can be easily used and ensured the necessary security, I found JCCH, security solution systems' certificate authority product "Gléas". Gléas, which is being widely used in smart devices, is equipped not only with certificate management functions but also MDM functions such as remote wipe. Mr. Oshita explains why he chose it, not only because it has all the functions I wanted, but also because it was attractive because it could be integrated with the certificate management required for authentication. "Originally, we planned to introduce the products required for authentication and the MDM product separately, but if we could integrate them, we would be able to significantly reduce the management burden. Also, authentication using certificates does not require complicated operations. , It was perfect for the introduction of smartphones that we think.”

As for the remote access product to be combined with Gléas, Juniper Networks' SSL-VPN product "Pulse Secure MAG", which has an extensive track record of cooperation, was selected. In the previous remote access environment, we used products from other vendors, but it was difficult to support smart devices as it was, and there were issues such as the lack of a license system that matched the scale. says Mr. Oshita. "Using the ActiveSync linkage function of Pulse Secure MAG, users' emails are synchronized between the Exchange server and the iPhone's local email software, so emails can be checked in spare time, which improves productivity. Did.
There are two ways to view emails from the iPhone, one is to leave the data locally on the iPhone and the other is not. There are also a number of sophisticated remote access products on the market, but they all serve too large a user base. If you're like us and want high security but have 100-200 users, such a product doesn't justify the investment cost. In that respect, Pulse Secure MAG not only has excellent functions such as ActiveSync linkage and security, but also has a product lineup and license system that is easy to use even in a small scale.

Get the security you need with less effort

Demonstrate how smart devices are used and lead to the development of your own products

The use of remote access for smart devices using Pulse Secure MAG and Gléas began in the spring of 2013. In the actual implementation, the devices used were limited to iOS devices, rather than Android devices, which had security concerns. iPhones are distributed to employees, and each of them operates them by themselves, downloads the configuration profile, and configures them.

“Because it coincided with the busy end of the year, we distributed a detailed manual that included the phone book migration process before introducing smartphones. With their support, we were able to make the transition smoothly. In addition to the iPhones that were distributed to replace mobile phones, iPads will be distributed as needed."

Mr. Oshita added that both iPhone and iPad are linked to individuals and managed, partly because there is a high possibility of handling confidential information of business partners. The account name is set as the terminal name, and it is also devised so that it is easy to understand whose terminal it is from the Gléas management screen. Mr. Honda also told us that they conducted exercises that simulated the actual loss of a device.
"We also practiced remote wiping and searching for a lost device, and I was relieved to find that it was a simple and reliable function. We use Gléas' MDM function for remote wiping, so we can report the loss. When we receive it, the management side can respond immediately. We use Apple's standard function to search for devices, and this is also highly accurate and practical enough."

It is expected that more detailed support for customers will be possible in the future, as it can be started more quickly than a PC and allows more detailed communication than a mobile phone. In fact, it is said that employees have heard that it has become easier to use their free time. Mr. Oshita says that if employees become accustomed to using smartphones and are able to make various proposals based on a real sense of the benefits, it should lead to benefits for customers.
“What we are currently working on is the stage where we are actually demonstrating a business style that utilizes smart devices. To that end, I am proud that this system was perfect for Wiseman, as we were able to achieve security that was suitable for the company with a small administrative burden.”
