Focusing on endpoint administrator management as part of multi-layered defense

One of the Relo Group's missions is to "support non-core business operations so that Japanese companies can focus on their core business in order to compete globally," and under its vision of "creating a 'comprehensive lifestyle support service industry' that operates on a global scale," the group is actively expanding its business operations, including through M&A. The group operates a diversified portfolio across five fields, including employee benefits and corporate housing management.

"As our business diversifies and services become more digital, we view security measures as a top management priority for continuing our business activities. Cyber attacks, particularly those involving ransomware and targeted attacks, are becoming more sophisticated every day, so we believe that strong multi-layered defenses are necessary," says Rumiko Kudo, Unit Manager of the Relo Group's IT Planning Support Unit.

The unit manages approximately 8,000 PCs, and has implemented multiple security measures to date, including EDR and vulnerability management for malware prevention, as well as IT asset and log management. While measures were also taken early on to manage privileged IDs for servers, controlling endpoint administrator privileges remained an issue.

"From the perspective of convenience and efficiency, we granted administrator privileges to almost everyone. Although we had rules prohibiting the installation of unauthorized applications, we had no technical mechanism to control this," explains Shino Takeno of the IT Security Group of the IT Planning Support Unit.

As the company expanded its business through M&A and the number of PCs increased, the amount of software it was unable to keep track of became enormous. In recent years, there have been cases where external cyber attacks have involved the hijacking of PC administrator privileges, leading to attacks that have accessed the server. The company also needs to be prepared for internal fraud. Given this situation, the CIO had requested immediate action.
