We participated in GitHub Universe 2022!
GitHub Universe has been running since 2015, but this is the first time in three years that it has been held on-site! It was held over two days, November 9th (Wednesday) and 10th (Thursday), 2022, at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in downtown San Francisco, California, USA. After the past two years of listening to lectures remotely while rubbing my sleepy eyes, I participated in a real event on-site for the first time in a while. I also participated in an event for partners, and stayed for a total of 4 nights and 6 days.

Compared to the last on-site event (2019), I had the impression that the venue was more compact. I think there were about 15 participants from Japan. This time I stayed at a hotel near Powell Street Station, and it was about a 7-8 minute walk to the venue. It's nice to be close.
In this article, I would like to write about the following:
- GitHub Universe2022 summary and venue
- Regarding overseas business trips during the weak yen, high prices, and the coronavirus pandemic

①GitHub Universe2022 summary and venue situation
We will introduce some of the information announced at Universe!
The beginning of the spread of Codespaces?
This involves creating a development environment on the cloud provided by GitHub. Since it is created within GitHub, you can easily clone and push the Repository. Since this uses a cloud environment, it is a so-called pay-as-you-go system where fees are added depending on the time.
Universe has announced that personal accounts will be given 60 hours/month of free time. Although there are probably many users who are already using Codespaces, it is expected that the use of Codespaces by engineers will accelerate even more in the future. In order to secure such human resources, companies will need to create an environment in which they can use it.
It was also announced that the GPU will be selectable in machine settings. This can be used in situations where a high-spec machine is temporarily required for machine learning. The strength of Codespaces is that even people who want to try machine learning, but GPUs are expensive and don't have the motivation to buy one, can easily do so.

Compatible with Gantt chart
You will be able to create a Gantt chart from tasks registered with a function called Roadmap. This makes it much easier to check progress as the delivery date can be visually seen. In addition, by using the existing Projects function, I think it will be possible to manage tasks more efficiently.
The Projects function can be used not only by people who manage overall progress such as team leaders, but also by engineers in charge of development for daily task management. Of course, you can also use it in your personal repository, so if you are not good at managing daily tasks, please take advantage of it.
What is GitHub Next?
This is a team of GitHub engineers who research features and create prototypes. GitHub Copilot will also be released as an actual feature by this team. Among the current initiatives announced at Universe, I personally found them interesting: “AI for Pull Requests” and “GitHub Blocks.”
“AI for Pull Requests” allows you to call a bot on an issue, and it will check the issue title and content and suggest ways to fix it. If this becomes a reality, simple modifications can be completed without the need to open the code in an editor, allowing more man-hours to be spent on developing larger features.
“GitHub Blocks” is a more graphical way to create README files. It is also possible to display the traffic status of the repository in a graph. Also, it seems that a certain amount of template blocks are provided, so even those who are not good at designing and creating can use it.
Integrate CI tools into GitHub with Actions Importer
It converts Workflow files used by other CI tools into Workflow files for Actions. It is provided as an extension to the GitHub CLI and can be executed based on the command line. If you understand that Actions is convenient because automatic migration is possible, but are reluctant to migrate due to the hassle, why not take this opportunity to migrate to Actions?
Unique to GitHub! ? live coding
Just like last year, we did "live coding of music" as a show before Keynote. This involves parameterizing things like the tempo of a song and the type of instrument, and DJing while changing the values in real time. When I first saw it, I had no idea what it was doing... I was impressed by the fact that he was not an ordinary DJ.

②About overseas business trips during the weak yen, high prices, and coronavirus pandemic
Apply for proof of vaccination well in advance...
If you have a My Number Card, you can obtain a certificate using the COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate App, and you can display it at any time by launching the app.
If you do not have a My Number Card, you will need to apply to each local government for a certificate.
Depending on the local government, it may take up to three weeks from application to obtaining the original certificate. You don't want to be forced to give up your trip because you can't get a vaccination certificate. To avoid such a situation, it is best to start preparing early if there is a possibility of traveling. I was also someone who was very impatient...I know this first hand.
No shutter sound? ?
I am using iPhone 13 Pro (iOS15). After arriving at the San Francisco airport, the sky was so beautiful that I took a photo, but the camera shutter did not make a sound. It is unclear under what conditions the shutter sound stopped sounding, but the difference from before leaving Japan is that the SIM was replaced and this is America instead of Japan. I thought this would allow me to take slide pictures during the lecture without any hesitation. Then I took an Uber. During my stay, I used Uber 5 to 6 times, but there were many opportunities to ride Tesla.
Impact of weak yen and high prices
On the first night, I ate lunch in my hotel room.
Chicken rice bowl.
How much do you think this costs?
A whopping 3,000 yen. . . I immediately realized the high cost of living.
One night I went out to a sports bar. A huge number of taps are connected. This is all craft beer. Even with the impact of the weaker yen, it was still cheaper or about the same as drinking in Japan, at $7-10/pint.
We enjoyed various styles of beer while watching NBA and college basketball.
On the last day, we bought souvenirs and had dinner at McCormick & Kuleto's Seafood &STEAKS in Ghirardelli Square. Mains ranged from $25 to $60. Since it was our last day, we enjoyed some gorgeous seafood.

3 recommended souvenirs
- Peet's Coffee
We recommend coffee beans from Peet's Coffee. Although it is sold at supermarkets, we recommend purchasing directly from a Peet's Coffee store. You can use the beans as is, or of course you can have them ground.
Just imagining the depth and richness of the freshly ground aroma makes me feel happy. This time, I purchased the medium roast Nicaragua Las Hermanas, recommended by the staff, for $19.95/lb. 1 pound = approximately 450g, so it's a good deal to be able to enjoy high quality coffee at this price.

- Trader Joe's
Although they are a classic, Trader Joe's eco bags are very popular. There were also some new designs. This yellow bag in particular has an illustration of a milk carton even on the bottom gusset. I really like this design, which focuses on things that people don't usually see. It seems like everyday shopping will be even more fun. - craft beer
Although there is a limit to how much you can bring in, craft beer (cans) can be purchased for about 1/3 of the price in Japan, so we also recommend this.
