Interesting session or booth

Various statistical information has been released at Octoverse 2019 this year as usual. If you are interested, please click here (https://octoverse.github.com/) from here. More than 40 million people around the world use GitHub, and it seems that more than 10 million developers have started using GitHub since 2019.

Customers often ask me about case studies of other companies, such as "Is there a company in the same situation as ours?", so I try to obtain various information every day. At GitHub Universe 2019, it was great to hear the examples of Ford and Expedia. Of course, there were technical discussions, but most of the parts focused on organizational theory, such as how to foster a better development environment and corporate culture. When starting something new, there are more than a few resistance forces and challenges, but it was a valuable opportunity to systematically hear how they overcame them.

Most of the booths in the venue went around. We visited JFrog, CircleCI, which we handle, ZenHub, which provides Kanban functions on GitHub, Synk, WhiteSource, etc., which are related to security measures, and showed us as many demos as possible. The hot dogs provided by SENTRY were very delicious, and I was indebted to them for two days. I would rather have this than lunch... (ry

It's not a shame to throw away the shame of traveling, but it's not a trip in the first place, but I recommend actively going around the booths. It was a great opportunity to acquire the latest information (trends, technology) locally.

Build your own Octocat

Octocat is cute, isn't it? At GitHub Universe, you can create your very own Octocat. Due to its popularity, it can get quite busy during lunch breaks and breaks between sessions.

There are four design systems in total, and the staff will guide you to the available system. So I create an original Octocat, and after 30 minutes, I can receive the Octocat I made myself at the Shop. Of course it's free. You can save time by creating it in advance on the web (https://myoctocat.com/).

Shop (goods)

I bought a hoodie and a T-shirt from the Shop. They are GitHub Universe 2019 originals with the letters "Universe" and "SF19" printed on them. (Of course, we also sell regular hoodies)

It was a quick decision for the following two reasons.

1. Weak at limited items that can only be purchased at this place or at this time,
2. It was very cold inside the venue, and I had to wear layers as much as possible to protect myself from the cold.

And both instincts made me do so. If it will be held at the same venue next year, it would be better to take measures against the cold.

② To everyone who is considering participating in the next GitHub Universe

Here are GitHub Universe Tips. We hope for your reference.

Communication environment, mobile phone

As for my personal cell phone, I purchased a SIM card in advance in Japan and replaced the SIM card locally. I was able to use it without any problems at the venue of GitHub Universe 2019 in the city of San Francisco. In the first place, at the venue of GitHub Universe 2019, you can also connect to the provided Wi-Fi. Therefore, I never felt inconvenient about the communication environment.

destination

Stayed at Fisherman's Wharf. It is close to the Palace of Fine Arts, the venue of GitHub Universe 2019, and it takes about 10 minutes by Uber. There are 2 supermarkets within walking distance, Boudin Bakery & Cafe, which is famous for clam chowder, and Alcatraz Island, a prison island that was considered impossible to escape from the coast. In addition, it was a 15-minute walk to Lombard Street, which was a steep slope, but it was perfect for a morning walk.

However, if you are planning to visit GitHub Headquarters or visit other DevOps tool vendors besides participating in GitHub Universe, we recommend staying in the downtown areas of Union Square and Powell Street Station. (Please be careful not to enter the unsafe The Tenderloin)

transportation

I used Uber to travel to and from the GitHub Universe 2019 venue. I would like to use it again when I participate next time.

(go)
Keynote started at 9:00. I left the hotel (Fisherman's Wharf area) after 8:00 am looking forward to the breakfast served at the venue. It took about 20 minutes including Uber dispatch and boarding time, and it was around 8:25 when we arrived near the entrance of the venue. It was around 8:45 when registration was completed and breakfast was served. Since you need to register for admission on the first day, I think you should leave the hotel quickly. While I was standing in line to register, more and more people were lining up who wouldn't be able to get in by 9:00.
*Keynote started at around 9:15, 15 minutes late, perhaps due to the management's consideration.

(Return)
Since it was an event with 1,000 people, I was a little worried about Uber on the way home, but I was able to get on both days without waiting for 10 minutes. I have the impression that the number of people gradually decreased from around 15:00 to the evening, so I may have actually benefited from that.
At a later date, at the private event ``GitHub Enterprise Roadshow'' held in Tokyo, people from GitHub US head office said, "I am very happy that the Japanese people stayed at the venue until the end and received many requests and questions." I received a comment. I could tell that people in Japan had a strong interest in GitHub, and it was also the moment I realized that most people had left the venue for Universe 2019 (laughs).

In any case, I was able to ride Uber smoothly on the last day and arrived at my destination. As for the place we arrived at, it was a dinner venue where GitHub Japan kindly reserved seats for about 30 participants from Japan. Appetizers, steaks, crabs, all dishes were really delicious. And above all, I was able to exchange various opinions with people who spent the same time at the venue, and I was able to spend a very wonderful final night. Thanks to everyone at GitHub Japan for planning the Japanese Association.

~ extra edition ~

The day before GitHub Universe 2019, we were informed about the enhanced partner program. He also explained to us what a partner should be, saying that instead of just selling licenses, we should become a trusted advisor to our customers. This is an idea that Macnica also values very much, so I realized once again that we were right in operating based on that idea.

We believe that we will be able to provide even more powerful support to all of you. looking forward to!
See you soon!
