This article describes the main points of Taoglas' GPS Loop antenna (GLA.01) application note: APN-11-8-005.C.

1. Basic information

Features of GLA.01

・Small package: 5.0*3.0*0.5mm

・Frequency band: 1575.42MHz (GPS/GALILEO compatible)

・High efficiency: 80%

・Omnidirectional

・Surface mount type

・RoHS compliant

2. Application

・For small devices/navigation systems that require high reception performance

・Mobile terminal/smartphone

・Tracking device

3. Radiation pattern

Red line: co-polarization (performance of the same polarization)

Blue frame: cross-polarization

4. Antenna position

Precautions in placing antennas Part 1

・Place it at the edge of the PCB and in the center

・Target the GND area around the antenna as much as possible

・Please provide a clearance of 5 mm around

・A PCB size of 50mm*10mm or more is recommended.

*Please refer to the board size of each data sheet to obtain the maximum performance of the antenna.

Precautions in placing antennas Part 2

・Since this antenna is omnidirectional, the same characteristics can be achieved even if the PCB is rotated.

・Do not place metal on (A), (B), and (C)

4. Layout guidelines

・Clearance is required for both Top and Bottom. Also, ensure a clearance of 2.5 mm under the antenna.

・As for the Via, keep it as close to the clearance area as possible, so that the optimum GND characteristics can be obtained.

• Connect to GND for "G2" suggested in the above diagram and connect to GND for "G1" through a 0Ω resistor. It is possible to change to IFA and monopole by mounting / not mounting 0Ω resistor.

・Arrange the π-type matching circuit described below so that the pattern is short, and connect "1" and "3" directly to GND.

- Wiring pattern should be 50Ω.

・Do not bend the wiring at 90°. In that case, wire at 45° or round as shown in the figure below.

7. Matching

The above figure is an example of matching when using the Smith chart.
