Transition of insulation standards

Insulation standards have been revised to keep pace with the evolution of devices and the expansion of their application scope.

VDE 0884-10 was widely adopted as an insulation performance evaluation standard for magnetically coupled and capacitively coupled isolators, but its successor standard, VDE 0884-11, was issued, and after a transition period, VDE 0884-10 was discontinued.

Currently, there is a shift towards IEC 60747-17 as the international standard for evaluating the insulation performance of isolators.

Skyworks' isolator products have also transitioned from the previously held VDE 0884-10 certification to IEC 60747-17 certification, and are now being evaluated for insulation performance based on IEC 60747-17.

What is being evaluated in terms of insulation performance?

The performance of insulating devices is evaluated from three main perspectives:

- Must be able to maintain insulation performance during normal operation.
- Must be able to withstand temporary overvoltages such as lightning surges.
- The insulation performance does not deteriorate even after long-term use.

 

To evaluate these aspects, voltage withstand tests, surge tests, and long-term reliability tests are conducted.

Differences between VDE 0884-10 and IEC 60747-17

IEC 60747-17 revises the evaluation items and criteria for the insulation performance of isolators compared to the conventional VDE 0884-10.

 

One of the most significant changes is the surge test. While VDE 0884-10 used a 10kV unipolar surge test for evaluation, IEC 60747-17 has changed to a 10kV bipolar surge test (both positive and negative directions), strengthening the evaluation criteria for surge resistance.

Furthermore, long-term reliability evaluation based on TDDB (Time Dependent Dielectric Breakdown) has been added, which evaluates not only instantaneous withstand voltage performance but also whether the insulation performance can be maintained over a long period of time.

Thus, IEC 60747-17 has revised surge test conditions and evaluation methods compared to VDE 0884-10, making it a standard that more rigorously evaluates the insulation performance of isolators.

As can be seen from the table, reinforced insulation has stringent standards set for surge withstand capability, required lifespan, and failure rate.

While VDE 0884-10 also had a certification category for reinforced insulation, the evaluation criteria were revised in conjunction with the transition to IEC 60747-17, and under IEC 60747-17, it may be evaluated as basic insulation.

However, this does not mean that the product's insulation performance has deteriorated; it is due to a change in evaluation criteria. The track record and insulation performance of the previous product have not been lost, and it can be seen as the product being re-evaluated under stricter conditions in the new standard.

While the basic principles of insulation standards are common, evaluation methods and requirements differ from standard to standard, so certification results may vary, such as for basic insulation or reinforced insulation. This does not necessarily mean that the safety of the product has decreased.

Furthermore, products previously certified as reinforced insulation under existing standards may still be usable as reinforced insulation depending on the operating conditions and requirements of the customer's system. Ultimately, the decision must be made based on a design evaluation of the entire system, including the required insulation performance, operating voltage, overvoltage conditions, and applicable standards.
