Single Pair Ethernet, SPE

Introduction

This article introduces the Single Pair Ethernet Consortium (SPEC), in which Macnica is participating as a promoter.

Purpose of the Single Pair Ethernet Consortium (SPEC)

The Single Pair Ethernet Consortium was established to realize and popularize fundamental technology that combines communication connectivity and power supply into one.

SPEC has established specifications for Single Pair Ethernet and DC power supply systems, which are composed of equipment, devices, cables, connectors, etc., based on IEEE.ISO/IEC standards, and ensures that each system has the same performance, reliably and safely. We are working to make it available to you.
In addition, the Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) DC power supply system aims to create a sustainable world as a smart system that reduces the use of various resources, saves energy, and works with various power supply systems.

Single Pair Ethernet / What is Single Pair Ethernet?

Single Pair Ethernet is a communication technology that allows communication and power supply using one pair of signal lines (one pair of conductors). 100BASE-T1 was originally created for automotive networks, but it is also attracting attention for its use in industrial equipment due to its power savings and ease of handling.

By using this technology, it is expected that it can be used in areas where conventional 4-pair cables are difficult to wire, and that it will also be effective in reducing resources. By changing from the conventional 4-pair cable to a 1-pair cable, the weight of the conductor can be reduced by 1/4, and when including the cable coating, it is expected to reduce resources by more than 75%. PoDL (Power over Data Line) also reduces power cables. Furthermore, the size of the connector can be made smaller, allowing for space savings.

Additionally, Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) has technology that enables longer distance transmission than conventional Ethernet, and is used in network construction in a wide range of fields.

About SPEC's efforts

SPEC establishes implementation guidelines based on international standards, and aims to ensure that all vendors can safely provide the same performance and quality.

Specifically, we will formulate guidelines through specification studies and demonstration tests to enable communication and power supply in one-to-one and one-to-multiple systems such as those shown below.

By doing so, we aim to create a system that can communicate over longer distances than previous standards.
