±12V isolated power supply reference board specialized for PLC/FA equipment

Analog signal processing circuits for sensors are often implemented in devices connected to PLC (programmable logic controller) and FA (factory automation) related fieldbuses. This analog signal processing circuit requires high accuracy, and at the same time requires isolated positive and negative power supplies for reliability reasons to prevent unexpected failures at the sensor node from spreading to the entire system.

The Barrier to Isolated Power Supply Design Is Transformers

High-precision analog circuits require an isolated power supply because they need to be disconnected from GND to prevent noise and improve reliability.

Here, the selection of a transformer becomes a barrier to isolated power supply design. In general, even if an isolated power supply IC is selected, it will be necessary to custom develop a transformer that meets the power supply specifications.

Transformer design rarely goes well on the first try, so many people give up on in-house production of insulated power supplies and outsource to manufacturers specializing in power supply modules.

Isolated power supply IC with lower design hurdles

Analog Devices' unique voltage control method increases flexibility in transformer selection. Table 1 is an example of a transformer listed as a recommended component in the LT8302 data sheet.

It is possible to obtain it as a general-purpose part, not a custom product.

In addition, the built-in power FET greatly reduces the design difficulty.

±12V Isolated Power Reference Board

This time, we have developed an original Macnica ±12V isolated power supply reference board specifically for PLC and FA equipment. This board is recommended for PLC and FA equipment designers who need a reference board for a power supply that converts ±12V switching isolated output to ±10V using positive and negative LDOs.

All design data will be made public, so you can use it with the same circuit configuration. Additionally, if necessary, it is possible to change the output voltage value to ±15V without changing the transformer by simply changing one voltage setting resistor.

Modification to ±5V isolated power supply can be easily realized from this board.
