A "near miss" occurred at an overseas group company. There are limits to manually managing publicly available assets.
Mitsubishi Chemical is one of Japan's leading diversified chemical manufacturers. It was established in April 2017 through the merger of three chemical business companies: Mitsubishi Chemical, Mitsubishi Plastics, and Mitsubishi Rayon. As of March 2025, the group will have several hundred affiliated companies, including global ones. Toward the group's purpose of "realizing KAITEKI - the sustainable comfort of people, society, and the planet," the group is working to provide innovative solutions to global social issues such as climate change, resource recycling, and food and water resource issues.
The company faced the issue of inadequate asset management and control at its many group companies both in Japan and overseas. Ryohei Onishi of the Cyber Defense Department, IT Service Operations Division, Digital Headquarters, recalls, "A major problem was that we didn't know where the holes were in publicly available assets, and we couldn't even see the targets. In the midst of this, several near misses occurred at overseas group companies from the second half of 2022 through the following year. Although they were minor incidents, the Company felt a strong sense of crisis."
Previously, the company had manually collected vulnerability information related to operating systems, VPNs, etc. Furthermore, the verification work was also manual, placing a considerable burden on the person in charge. As a temporary measure, in September 2023, the company implemented the painstaking work of checking each and every IP address it managed. Although it decided to implement countermeasures for targets deemed to be at high risk, it was only able to complete about half of the work.
Given this situation, the company decided that it would be difficult to continue taking countermeasures manually, and that comprehensiveness could not be guaranteed. They began to consider a fundamental solution. Michio Kimura, Director of Cyber Defense, explains, "So, we decided to first reduce risk by prioritizing measures for areas likely to be attacked from the outside, known as External Attack Surface Management (EASM)."
