Winbond Electronics, a global supplier of semiconductor memory solutions, has announced the new OctalNAND/W35N-JW family.

In recent years, scaling of NOR flash memory is approaching its limits, and in the capacity band of 512 Mbits and above, the decline in cost efficiency has become a particular problem, especially for automotive and industrial equipment. Winbond newly developed OctalNAND to solve this problem. Winbond's OctalNAND, the world's first NAND flash memory with an octal interface, provides customers with large capacity code storage at no extra cost.

The OctalNAND/W35N-JW family is manufactured on Winbond's 46nm single-level cell (SLC) NAND process to achieve the high endurance and reliability required for robust automotive and industrial applications. provides 10-year data retention and 100,000 program/erase cycles.

The 1Gbit W35N01JW is the world's first NAND product with an octal interface. The continuous read throughput is up to 240Mbytes/sec, which is three times faster than the existing high-performance serial NAND flash memory/W25N-JW family. It is also 1.5 times faster than the dual quad serial NAND flash memory/W72N-JW family.

Contributes to fast boot code execution and reduced BOM cost

Applications such as automotive graphic displays and ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) often have bootcode sizes of 512Mbits or more. Traditionally, NOR flash memory has been used due to its high reliability and fast read throughput. However, NOR flash memory is reaching its limits in terms of scaling, and the die size is particularly large at densities of 512 Mbits and above, resulting in high cost.

NAND flash memory excels in terms of scaling and is best suited for 1 Gbit and higher capacities. However, conventional NAND flash memory has the disadvantage of slow read throughput.
