A board with an unstable power output suddenly occurred!

The output of a DC/DC converter on a board under development or mass production may suddenly become unstable.

Even though the evaluation board or prototype board worked without any problems, the power output suddenly becomes unstable or oscillates when multiple boards are mass-produced, and the device sometimes breaks down. .

To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to check whether the compensation circuit is correctly adjusted according to the required specifications of the power supply and to check the phase margin.

Why is it unstable?

No problems occurred during evaluation, so why is the output of the power supply unstable during mass production?
Empirically there are the following possibilities:

  • There is no margin in the performance of the internal error amplifier of the power supply IC (module) manufacturer
  • The constants are not selected according to the circuit recommended by the power supply IC (module) manufacturer.
  • The compensation circuit is not adjusted when the input/output voltage conditions of the power supply or load conditions change
  • Due to the bad board layout, it is a condition that phase margin cannot be obtained even if the recommended circuit is followed.

There are various possibilities like this. We recommend measuring the phase margin during evaluation and before mass production, because measuring the phase margin allows you to immediately check for potential problems.
