Ethernet transceiver ideal for FA environment
"DP83822" is a 10/100 Ethernet physical layer transceiver provided by Texas Instruments.
This article explains the following three features and benefits of the DP83822.
- The industry's highest durability, ideal for I/F with FA equipment and motor drives in harsh environments
- Compatible with EtherCAT®
- Low power consumption
1. Best durability in the industry, ideal for I/F with FA equipment and motor drives in harsh environments
The DP83822 meets the following performance:
- Electrostatic Discharge Human Body Model (HBM): ±16 kV or more
- Electrostatic discharge protection performance: ±8kV or more
- Temperature range: -40 to 125°C (-40 to 85°C depending on model number)
The static resistance is more than double that of competitors, and the operating temperature range is -40 to 125°C (DP83822H), making it the industry's highest level of durability.
It is the ideal device for factory automation and motor control that are exposed to harsh environments.
2. Compatible with EtherCAT®
The DP83822 has environmental resistance and a high operating temperature range, so it can be used even when communicating with EtherCAT®, which is expected to spread in FA equipment and motor drives in the future.
EtherCAT® is one of the industrial open field network standards compatible with Ethernet, proposed by the German company Beckhoff Automation.
In addition to EtherCAT®, PROFINET and Ethernet/IP can also be used as industrial open networks.
3. Low power consumption
DP83822 has three energy saving modes.
- Normal mode
- Active sleep mode
- Passive sleep mode
Power consumption can be reduced appropriately by using the energy saving mode.
When used with a 1.8V power supply, the power consumption of the analog power supply is less than 110mW.
* Conditions: 100Base-TX, RMII, Link-up, no transmission

"DP83822EVM" evaluation module for immediate development
DP83822EVM is an evaluation module for developing DP83822.
The DP83822EVM supports 10/100Mbps and complies with the IEEE 802.3u standard.
It also supports MII, RMII, and RGMII MAC interfaces, allowing users to quickly perform the required functional evaluation.
The DP83822EVM has two onboard status LEDs, a 5V USB connector with an onboard LDO, and an SMI (serial interface) accessible using the USB-2-MDIO tool.
Evaluation step
This evaluation module can be easily evaluated by the following steps.
1. Configure power with jumper settings
2. Jumper setting for reference clock frequency
3. Jumper settings for LED LINK/ACT
4. Connect 5.0V micro USB power supply and power on
5. Connect CAT5, CAT5E or CAT6 cable to RJ45 connector
Connect far end of Ethernet cable to link partner
If the connection works properly, you can check it with the LED display of the evaluation module.
