Information on (provisional) 5G communication evaluation kit

Introduction

Full-scale commercial use of 5G started in March 2020. The 5G area continues to expand.

In addition, 5G standards will gradually change in the future, and further evolution is expected.

SDX55-equipped 5G communication module (Release 15) models have already been released by various companies, and now SDX62-equipped models (Release 16 partially compliant) have begun to be released. This time, we will introduce the evaluation environment for those who are considering 5G communication modules.

Introduction of equipment used

Equipment used

TurboX™ T55 Development Kit (5G Sub-6GHz) (MHF4 terminal antenna, 12V / 2A_AC adapter included)

・USB cable (Type-A to Type-C)

・Note PC (Evaluation kit connection, for AT command control)

・docomo 5G nano SIM card

Evaluation environment setup procedure

Fig. 3 USB driver recognition and carrier real network connection confirmation

Connect as shown in Figure 1. If you can see the USB driver framed in red in Device Manager, it is connected to the evaluation board.

The docomo 5G SIM used this time can be automatically connected, so at this point you can connect to the carrier's actual network.

(Due to the driver used on the Windows PC, LTE is currently displayed even if it is connected to a 5G network.)

Communication module control method

The communication module can be controlled by AT commands.

This time, we will launch Tera Term on the PC side and try to control AT commands.

There are a huge number of AT commands, from 3GPP standard general-purpose AT commands to manufacturer-specific AT commands.

This time, we will introduce AT commands that are often used when connecting to a real network.

Table. AT commands often used when connecting to a carrier's actual network

AT command

explanation

AT+CFUN

Carrier communication can be turned ON/OFF.

OFF operation: AT+CFUN=0

ON operation: AT+CFUN=1

Status check: AT+CFUN?

+ CFUN: 1

AT+CGATT

It is possible to check whether the network is attached or not.

AT+CGD CONT?

+CGATT: 1 (←Attached)

+CGATT: 0 (←not attached)

AT+CPIN

You can check the authentication status of the SIM card.

AT+CPIN?

+CPIN: READY (←authentication success)

AT+CGD CONT

APN setting & confirmation is possible.

AT+CGDCONT? (Confirm APN settings)

AT+CGDCONT=<cid>,"IP","APN" (APN setting)

Throughput measurement method

First, move to an area where 5G can be connected with your carrier and connect to the actual network.Throughput can be measured by opening Speedtest.net, etc. on a PC.

Our website introduces information on 5G technologies such as the 3GPP 5G standard "Release 16" and the technology "Semi-synchronous TDD" that allocates bandwidth to improve uplink throughput. I will continue to update it from time to time, so I want to know more about 5G! I would appreciate it if you could refer to it.
