In the third installment, I will explain Bluetooth module authentication (No.2 in the first article).

This is an item to be acquired by the Bluetooth module vendor, but it is also related to the customer, so I will explain it.

The answer to the subtitle is "Even if the Bluetooth 5.0 certified module is limited to the Bluetooth part, the supported functions are not necessarily the same."

I will also explain why.

Positioning of authentication point of view of Bluetooth module

Products related to Bluetooth are classified into one of the following seven types defined by the Bluetooth SIG.

The End Product is a category that satisfies the Bluetooth specifications for both SW and HW, and by using the End Product QDID, certification is possible without testing.

For details, please refer to the following Bluetooth SIG web page.

Qualification Process with No Required Testing

Since the Bluetooth module is an End Product, as explained in Part 2, registration is completed by applying online without testing. There is no problem with Microchip's Bluetooth module, but some commercially available Bluetooth modules are inexpensive, but are based on the premise that the customer will develop a Bluetooth stack, etc., and require testing at the time of certification. Please note that there is a module that corresponds to the above.

BLUETOOTH CORE SPECIFICATION Version 5.2 | Vol 0, Part B page 87

Reasons why differences occur even with the same Bluetooth Core Version (Bluetooth 5.0, etc.)

The Bluetooth specification has mandatory and optional items, and depending on whether or not the optional items are supported, even Bluetooth 5.0 certified modules will differ.

Relatively easy to understand, PHY is important because it is related to communication speed and distance. and Coded PHY (improved communication distance) are optional items.

When selecting a Bluetooth module, we recommend checking with the vendor to see if the required functions are supported. If you contact us, it is possible to answer whether the optional item is necessary for your use case and whether it is supported by each Microchip module.

LE 1M LE Coded S=2 LE Coded S=8 LE 2M
communication speed 1Mbps 500kbps 125kbps 2Mbps
