Counterfeits Spreading in Various Fields

Consumables play an important role in the manufacturing industry. However, in recent years, counterfeit consumables have appeared on the market, threatening the performance and reliability of industrial equipment. Fake consumables are attractive because they are cheap, but they can cause major incidents.

Security ICs are used as a means of distinguishing counterfeit consumables.

This article introduces an overview of Infineon's security IC that specializes in authenticity determination, and a solution that enables long-distance authentication using it.

Authenticity judgment IC chip manufactured by Infineon

Infineon's OPTIGA™ Authenticate S, an IC chip for determining authenticity, has the following features and is used to determine whether ink cartridges and batteries are genuine.

  • Distinguish between genuine and counterfeit products - when using counterfeit products, it is possible to limit functions
  • Two interfaces to choose from (SWI or I2C)
  • Notification of replacement/maintenance time by down counter
  • Disable authentication function for used products (Kill function)
  • Counter reset by authorized recycling vendor
  • In addition to device-side authentication, host-side authentication is also possible (one-way authentication or two-way authentication)

Authenticity determination that can be performed remotely

I2C/SWI, the interface of OPTIGA™ Authenticate S, has difficulty communicating over long distances of more than 10m. Therefore, Macnica has made the interface between the host and OPTIGA™ Authenticate S a UART, making it possible to communicate up to 15m according to the standard. Furthermore, in addition to UART, we have replaced the interface with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), making it possible to perform authentication wirelessly up to 100 meters according to the standard.

System configuration

The configuration of this system is shown below.

Consumables and accessories to be authenticated require an MCU that converts I2C ↔ UART or BLE in addition to OPTIGA™ Authenticate S.
The MCU does not have to be a high-performance MCU if it only has the role of mediating communication protocols. It is also possible to add authentication functions to existing MCUs on the consumables and accessories side.

Application example

Possible applications include industrial equipment in which the host and exchange are separated, and car keys that open and close doors wirelessly.

  • Oil device
  • feeder
  • remote control key
  • game controller
