What is an IPD (Intelligent Power Device)?

IPD is an abbreviation for Intelligent Power Device. It has not only a switch function that controls the power supply to loads such as resistive loads and inductive loads, but also a protection function and diagnostic function for various failures.

Why are IPDs used?

MOSFETs are commonly used as semiconductor switches. Using a single MOSFET as a switch will cause the MOSFET to fail if the load is shorted in the component circuit. On the other hand, IPDs have built-in protection circuits against overcurrent and overheating, as well as circuits that absorb the energy of inductive loads, so they do not fail even in abnormal conditions such as short circuits, and can maintain their function as switches. In the case of other failures, the diagnosis function provides feedback to the microcomputer, etc., and it is possible to set arbitrarily switch ON / OFF control.

What is PROFET™
