Overview
UN-R156 teeth, 2020 Year 6 Adopted in May SW United Nations regulations on updates. This regulation applies to vehicles that allow software updates for cars, vans, trucks, buses, trailers and agricultural vehicles.
For type approval, the OEM must demonstrate the following before placing the vehicle on the market:
・Software update management system (SUMS) is introduced and certified by the authorities
- 3 After yearly updates and related changes SUMS recertification
Securing software update delivery mechanisms
- e.g. completeness and authenticity of updates
・The software identification number is protected and can be read from the vehicle
Type approval related renewals are allowed only after registration and approval by the authorities.
SUMS requirements
Framework
“Software Update Management System (SUMS)”means a systematic approach that defines organizational processes and procedures for complying with the requirements for software update delivery pursuant to this Regulation. [UN-R156, Section 2.5]
SUMS provides a framework for implementing the necessary processes:
▪ Traceability and consistency of type-approved systems
▪ Unique identification of all initial and updated software
▪ Evaluation of whether software updates are relevant for type approval
▪ Identify interdependencies and verify compatibility
▪ Security (protecting the integrity and authenticity of software updates);
▪ Evaluating whether an update affects safety or safe driving
▪ Documentation of all of the above – and sharing of information with Certification Bodies (or OEMs in the case of suppliers)
