Introduction

Bluetooth SIG released Bluetooth Core Specification v5.0 (Bluetooth 5) in December 2016, adding new functions to Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).

As the name suggests, BLE has made it possible to improve communication speed and communication distance while maintaining low power consumption.
It is also expected to expand into fields that have not been used so far.

We will introduce the newly added functions from Bluetooth Low Energy ver.5.0 (BLE5)

LE 2M PHY & Coded PHY

LE 2M PHY doubles the data rate by doubling the modulation speed compared to conventional BLE without changing the GFSK modulation method.
Coded PHY has an added FEC (Error Correction) function, which can improve the accuracy of data arrival by lowering the transmission speed.
This function is generally called Long Range.

Advertising packet size expansion

The link layer packet format of unencoded PHY is almost the same as conventional BLE4.x, only the preamble size is different.

The preamble is 1 octet when using LE 1M PHY (traditional BLE4.x) and 2 octets when using LE 2M PHY.

The Extended Advertising PDU Header is the same as the conventional Advertising PDU, as shown in the attached image below.

As a feature, the size of the Adversing Channel PDU payload was up to 31 octets in the conventional BLE4.x, but in BLE5 it has been expanded to up to 255 octets.
