This article presents a programmable 3-channel LED current source driver reference design with isoSPI repeater.

CN0410 Programmable, 3-Channel LED Current Source Driver with isoSPI Repeater Features

LED lighting is widely adopted in industrial applications, but many LEDs are used to get enough light.

Due to the large size of typical LED drivers, engineers are under pressure to make LED drive circuits smaller.

The CN0410 is a reference design for an LED current source driver that can programmably control 3 LEDs from 0A to 1A and can be daisy-chained via an SPI interface.

In this article, we will discuss four major features of the CN0410:

  1. 3 channels/1A LED current source realized in a small circuit
  2. Low noise current source below 24μV pp
  3. Multiple boards can be daisy-chained with isolated SPI
  4. Easy evaluation in combination with an optional board

1. 3 channels/1A LED current source realized in a small circuit

The CN0410 consists of the following ADI products:

  • AD5686 16-Bit, Quad, Tiny D/A Converter with SPI Interface
  • ADA4500-2 10 MHz, 14.5 nV/√Hz, Rail-to-Rail Input/Output, Zero Input Crossover Distortion Op Amp
  • ADP7112 20 V, 200 mA, Low Noise Linear Regulator
  • ADR4520 Ultralow Noise, Precision 2.048 V Reference Voltage
  • LTC6820 Isolated SPI Interface

A block diagram of the CN0410 is shown below.

Since the AD5686 has four output channels, one D/A converter can control three output channels. This simplifies digital communication and reduces costs.

In addition, each channel can be individually programmed to deliver currents from 0A up to 1A.

2. Low noise current source of less than 24μV pp

The ADR4520, which provides the voltage reference for the AD5686, has a very low noise of 1 µV pp @ 0.1 Hz to 10 Hz.

The ADP7112 linear regulator that powers the ADR4520 also has a low noise of 11 μV rms.

Additionally, the noise performance of the ADA4500-2, the amplifier that buffers the output of the AD5686, is 2 μV pp @ 0.1 Hz to 10 Hz.

Due to the excellent noise characteristics of these analog ICs, the CN0410 achieves low noise of less than 24μV pp from 0.1Hz to 10Hz.

3. Multiple boards can be daisy-chained with isolated SPI

The communication interface of the CN0410 employs the LTC6820, an isolated SPI controller that can extend up to 100m in harsh noise environments.

This SPI interface allows multiple boards to be daisy chained together.

4. Easy evaluation in combination with an optional board

CFTL-LED-BAR is available as an LED for evaluating the CN0410.

CFTL-LED-BAR is a bright and high brightness red, green and blue three-color LED bar for lighting applications.

The LEDs on the board can handle up to 1A. You can also use up to 4 LEDs per color by simply applying standard shunts.
(Each additional LED required in a string requires an additional 3V on the power supply. See product user guide for details)

EVAL-ADICUP3029

The EVAL-ADICUP3029, an Arduino and PMOD compatible form factor development board, can be used to connect the CN0410 to a PC.

You can run the CN0410 with the EVAL-ADICUP3029 and an open source Eclipse-based interactive development environment (IDE), CrossCore Embedded Studio and sample code.
