The LTM8042 and LTM8042-1 are LED drivers from Analog Devices, Inc. that come in three topologies: boost, buck, and buck-boost.

Analog dimming and PWM dimming capabilities make it ideal for lighting as well as industrial illumination, backlight displays, scanners, and automotive lighting applications.

In this article, we will explain the three major features of the LTM8042 and LTM8042-1.

1. Dimmable from ultra-low brightness

When using the PWM function, 3000:1 dimming is possible. This allows dimming from ultra-low brightness, making it applicable to a wide range of applications.

In addition, you can also perform 10:1 dimming by using the analog dimming function. Dimming is possible by adjusting the analog voltage to the dedicated CTL pin.

2. Drive up to 8 white LEDs simultaneously to ensure the required brightness

Capable of delivering up to 1A of current, the LTM8042 can drive up to 8 white and 9 red LEDs. (350mA for LTM8042-1)

Suitable for applications such as lighting where brightness is required.

3. Only 9mmx15mm size, high power but space saving

The LTM8042 and LTM8042-1 are 9mm x 15mm LGA packages. It is also very compact with a height of only 2.82mm.

Therefore, it contributes to the miniaturization and thinning of LED lighting.

"DC1511A" demo board for immediate evaluation

Analog Devices offers the LTM8042, LTM8042-1 evaluation board DC1511A (DC1511A-A for LTM8042, DC1511A-B for LTM8042-1).

With this evaluation board, you can immediately start evaluating the LTM8042, LTM8042-1. The procedure is as follows.

1. Connect the LED

Connect the LEDs as shown below.

2. With power off, connect input power.

Connect to BSTIN/BKLED and GND terminals to preset the DC input voltage. (See table below for recommended input voltage range)

3. Connect PWM pin

If PWM is not used, connect PWM to a 5V source or input voltage.

4. Turn on input power and start evaluation

For PWM dimming, PWM 100Hz or higher is required. Dimming can be achieved by changing the duty cycle of the PWM signal.
