The ID challenges faced by world-renowned mobility companies

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Honda) is a world-renowned comprehensive mobility company. Under its vision of "providing the joy of expanding the possibilities of life for all people," the company has expanded its business beyond its traditional two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicle businesses into new areas such as energy and services. Behind this global and diversified business development, one of the challenges was the decentralization of ID management and authentication infrastructure.

Risks and challenges posed by a distributed and aging authentication infrastructure.

In 2021-2022, Honda had multiple different authentication infrastructures, and they were also suffering from obsolescence. Kenji Yoshikawa, chief of the Authentication and Network Security Section in the Global Information Security Department, recalls, "At the Company, authentication infrastructures had been built separately for each organization, such as headquarters and research laboratories. Including AD (Active Directory), there were four major independent infrastructures, and users had to log in from different screens for each application, which was not very user-friendly. In addition, the existing systems were operated on-premises, and some only used passwords for authentication, making them vulnerable to the ever-evolving cyberattacks of today, and posing a considerable security risk."

There was also the issue of the burden of operation and management. Because it was operated on-premises, a great deal of effort was required for version upgrades and compatibility maintenance. Furthermore, personnel events (hiring, transfers, and departures) involve changes in permissions, but in some cases it took time for the permissions to be reflected after the event occurred, which caused problems in terms of speed and security. In addition, the effort of such inventory management was reflected in the cost. Yuta Nakayama, Chief of the Authentication and Network Security Section, Global Information Security Department, Digital Management Division, Corporate Management Headquarters, said, "In order to resolve these problems and improve user convenience, we started modernizing and integrating the authentication infrastructure as the first step in implementing zero trust. However, as we proceeded with the considerations, it became clear that simply refreshing the authentication would not be sufficient for adequate permission management and governance, and we determined that a redesign including the ID lifecycle and permission control was essential." Mr. Nakayama has been involved in the ID management refresh project since its inception and is currently in charge of operation and management.
