We introduced ASM services to accommodate the increasing amount of publicly available assets, but we are concerned about the accuracy and noise levels of the detection results.
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (hereinafter referred to as Mitsubishi Motors) is one of Japan's leading automobile manufacturers. Leveraging its SUV and 4WD technology honed through years of participation in rallies, the company's vehicles are renowned for their off-road capability and durability. Global retail sales for fiscal year 2024 reached 842,000 units. In recent years, sales of electric vehicles (PHEVs and EVs) have also been strong, and in September 2026, the company announced the new Pajero cross-country SUV, its first new model in seven years, attracting considerable attention.
The company conducts business on a global scale, but the Asia-ASEAN region is its most important market. Supporting this global expansion from an IT perspective is the Systems Infrastructure Department of the Global IT Headquarters. This department consists of four groups: Network Security, Workplace IT (Authentication/PC Environment), Server Infrastructure, and Manufacturing IT. Of these, the Network Security Group is responsible for monitoring and operating security, mainly in the OA (Office Automation) domain. Yuki Kuwajima, manager of the Systems Infrastructure Department, explains its mission: "We have established MMC-CERT and conduct incident investigations and vulnerability monitoring of the environment, including global locations and affiliated companies. We have also placed Security Officers (SOs) in our overseas affiliated companies and are working closely with our Network Security Group to ensure effective governance."
In recent years, with the IT environment spreading throughout the entire supply chain, the number of externally exposed assets that the company cannot fully grasp and manage has increased, and cyberattacks targeting these management gaps (attack surfaces) have also increased. To solve these problems, the company began a serious consideration of introducing an Attack Surface Management (ASM) tool in 2023 and compared tools from three companies.
"The challenges we faced at that time were the accuracy of the detection results and the amount of noise. When we compared each tool and identified our assets with each, we found that the list of IP addresses generated by each tool contained approximately 10,000 targets, but some products contained more than 10% of which were not the Company assets or those of our affiliated companies—in other words, noise. This meant that we would have to check each one ourselves to see if it was truly the Company asset, which would have taken up a lot of time, so we excluded it from our selection," said Kuwajima.
Thus, in June 2023, the company implemented an ASM tool from a certain company. However, as they continued to use it, new needs for further enhancing risk management became apparent. They began to feel the need for an environment that would allow them to utilize asset and risk information more efficiently and gain a comprehensive understanding of publicly available assets.
