As development data volumes increase, file sharing methods are fundamentally reviewed

Square Enix, known for popular game series such as "Final Fantasy" and "Dragon Quest," has Our Group's Purpose of "Let's create new worlds with infinite imagination," and operates in four areas, including digital entertainment. They provide a variety of content tailored to the lifestyles of their users on a global scale.

In recent years, the game industry has seen development become larger and more complex due to the increasing performance of dedicated devices known as console game machines and the spread of app games played on smartphones. In addition, the size of development data has become huge due to the trend toward high definition images, which has become a source of concern for companies.

Previously, when sharing development data, the company would use either an in-house file server or a transfer service, but various inconveniences arose with the transfer service. Yuki Furuya, Enterprise Infrastructure Leader, Information Systems Department, explains, "While development data is becoming larger in volume, existing services only had a 10GB limit per file, meaning that large data such as 4K movies could not be sent in one go, which resulted in extra work. We were also concerned about security, so we wanted to implement stronger security measures by incorporating IdP (Identify Provider) integration, two-factor authentication, and SSO (Single Sign On). Furthermore, since the COVID-19 outbreak, the number of people working from home has increased at the Company, so there has been an increased need to safely access development data from outside the company."

In addition, at the time, the company was seeing an increase in the number of projects each team was independently adopting SaaS, and it became necessary to re-establish governance over the use of cloud services. Therefore, in the summer of 2021, the company decided to fundamentally review its file sharing methods.
