Event Report in 5 Minutes: [Online Seminar] Redesigning the Operation of Surveillance Camera Footage
From June to July 2026, Macnica, in collaboration with Genetec Japan, held a three-part online seminar series on the theme of "Improving the Efficiency of Surveillance Camera Operations." Against the backdrop of labor shortages and the increasing burden of managing multiple locations, the role required of surveillance cameras is changing dramatically. From operations solely for recording and storage to an information infrastructure that supports operational efficiency and improved security—this seminar series explained everything from the challenges surrounding video operations to the benefits of using a VMS (Video Management System) and methods for a gradual transition.
Part 1: Why is it necessary to re-evaluate video operations now?
In the first installment of this series, we discussed the overall picture and concepts of video operations in physical security, explaining the changing environment surrounding surveillance camera operations and the challenges faced by companies. In the second session, the theme was "Redesigning the Operation of Surveillance Camera Footage - An Introduction to VMS Utilization Starting with NVR Operation," introducing a new approach to using video for business and security operations, moving away from the traditional recording-centric approach. In many workplaces, surveillance cameras are primarily used for "recording" and "reviewing after an incident," but with the increasing number of things to monitor and the worsening labor shortage, this type of operation alone is making it difficult to respond quickly and manage efficiently.
That's where VMS (Video Management System) comes into play.
By utilizing VMS,

- Allows for centralized management of camera footage and access control from multiple locations.
- Reduces the workload of survey and reporting tasks.
The benefits mentioned above suggest that viewing video not merely as something to be preserved, but as something to be utilized, is the mindset required for future video management.

In the final episode of the series, the theme was "Realistic Steps from NVR to VMS," and the process for migrating towards operational sophistication was explained.
While system modernization often conjures images of large-scale investments and replacements, it's actually possible to choose an approach that gradually enhances operations while utilizing existing surveillance cameras and equipment.

A key point highlighted in this webinar was the ability to migrate to VMS while minimizing costs and making maximum use of existing equipment. Examples of reusable equipment included IP cameras, authentication readers, electric locks, various sensors, audio systems, and IoT devices. In particular, products listed on Genetec's supported device list have undergone operational verification by Genetec, and are devices that not only undergo connection verification but also have integration with Security Center considered. Therefore, it becomes possible to centrally manage functions such as video surveillance, access control, and alarm management on an integrated platform while utilizing currently used equipment. A major advantage highlighted was that it eliminates the need to replace all equipment at once, allowing for a gradual and planned transition to next-generation security operations while keeping initial investments low.

Many questions were raised during the seminar regarding VMS operation methods and scalability. Here, we present some of the most representative questions and their answers.
Q. Is it possible to access the Genetec system itself and operate it remotely from another PC?
A. Yes, it is possible.
Genetec Security Center uses a server-client architecture, allowing access to the system from a PC browser or smartphone app. It also supports simultaneous connections and work by multiple users.
Q. Can we edit the user procedure function of the access control system ourselves?
A. Yes, users can edit it.
No complex procedures are required, and users can configure and edit the settings themselves to suit their operational needs without needing to request work from the manufacturer.
Q. How many devices and functions can be integrated?
A. The scale of connections possible varies depending on the system configuration.
With a general-purpose server configuration, up to 300 cameras can be connected. Furthermore, using Genetec's appliance products, up to 800 cameras can be connected.
