Macnica begins selling the Synaptics Astra SL2600 series - Edge AI processor for IoT devices leveraging Synaptics' partnership with Google -
Macnica (headquarters: Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture; Representative Director and President: Kazumasa Hara; hereinafter referred to as Macnica") announced today that it has begun selling the Synaptics Astra SL2600 series, which enables advanced multimodal AI processing from Synaptics Inc. (headquarters: San Jose, California, USA; CEO: Rahul Patel; hereinafter referred to as "Synaptics").
Macnica and Synaptics have partnered since 2021 to promote the adoption of advanced AI and human-machine interface solutions. Macnica provides local engineering support and supply chain efficiency in Japan and related customers.
■Challenges in introducing edge AI
As IoT devices become more sophisticated and feature-rich, embedded designers face the challenge of simultaneously implementing AI processing and security functions within limited space and power. In particular, the introduction of edge AI presents challenges in balancing real-time performance, power consumption, computational performance, and security. The need to support future workloads, such as generative AI and multimodal AI, makes hardware selection difficult. Additionally, the lack of an open development environment can lengthen time to market.
■Features of the new Synaptics Astra SL2600 series processors for edge AI
The Astra SL2600 series launches with the SL2610 product line, which features five processor families tailored for diverse edge AI applications. These are specifically designed for a variety of use cases, including next-generation smart appliances, home/factory automation equipment, charging infrastructure, healthcare devices, retail POS terminals/scanners, autonomous robotic systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, and casual gaming devices. Compared to traditional edge AI devices, these processors deliver higher performance and better power efficiency.
The Astra SL2610 processor, powered by the new Synaptics Torq™ Edge AI platform, combines a future-proof NPU architecture with an open-source compiler, setting a new standard in IoT AI application development. Torq is the first to mass-produce Google's RISC-V-based Coral NPU with dynamic operator support, enabling future-proof edge AI designs. Leveraging the open-source IREE/MLIR compiler and runtime, the Astra SL2610 processor embodies a developer-centric approach. The SL2610 product line integrates Arm® Cortex®-A55, Cortex®-M52 with Helium™, and Mali™ GPU technology. These processors incorporate security directly into the silicon with a comprehensive, multi-layered approach, enabling an immutable root of trust (IRT), threat detection for cyberattacks, malware, and other security threats, and an application crypto coprocessor for managing demanding AI workloads.
The MLIR compiler framework supports dynamic operator updates, helping to design future-proof edge AI. It implements Google's ML Core and integrates Synaptics Astra AI native hardware with open-source software to accelerate the development of AI devices for IoT.
