Macnica to publish "MET REPORT - Seeds of Seeds," a report on cutting-edge technology exploration - Knowledge on biotechnology, quantum computing, and more in one volume
Macnica (Headquarters: Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture; Representative Director and President: Kazumasa Hara; hereinafter referred to as Macnica) has produced the 2025 edition of "MET REPORT - Seeds of Seeds," a research report summarizing trends in cutting-edge technologies that will pave the way to the future, and is releasing it today.
Throughout human history, technology has brought about major changes in society. In recent years, groundbreaking technologies such as smartphones, social media, and generative AI have transformed our very lifestyles. In the field of "exponential technology," which is experiencing rapid evolution, fierce competition in development continues around the world.
Over 50 years ago, Macnica identified semiconductors as the "seeds of innovation" for the next generation, and has continued to sow seeds with an eye to the future. To keep up with today's rapidly evolving technology, it is necessary to look even further ahead. To that end, we established the Frontier Research Lab (FRL), a specialized team dedicated to exploring the possibilities of new technologies, and are engaged in the search for "seeds" that are yet to be realized.
This report summarizes the knowledge gained through collaboration with domestic and international research institutions, startups, and industry, as well as through original research, on four topics that FRL focuses on: biotechnology, nuclear fusion, quantum computing, and artificial photosynthesis.

Biotechnology
In recent years, advances in synthetic biology and genome editing have garnered attention for biotechnology as a key to social change in the fields of medicine, the environment, and manufacturing. This report introduces the cutting edge of bioproduction using microbial fermentation, research and industry trends both in Japan and overseas, and the potential for new technological innovation through the use of AI.
・Nuclear fusion
Against the backdrop of increasing electricity demand due to the operation of AI models and systems that require massive computing power, nuclear fusion power generation is attracting attention as a sustainable, large-scale energy source. This article summarizes the mechanisms and challenges of the main technologies in nuclear fusion power generation, trends in research sites and startups both in Japan and overseas, and the latest prospects for practical application.
・Quantum computers
Quantum computers have the potential to rapidly solve problems that are difficult to solve with conventional computers, and are one of the technologies that will dramatically change society in the future. This article covers the importance of quantum simulators, the results of experiments using GPUs to increase speed, and efforts to acquire the technology for social implementation.
・Artificial photosynthesis
Toward the realization of a carbon-free society, artificial photosynthesis technology is being developed to produce hydrogen from sunlight and water without emitting CO₂. This program provides detailed information on a large-scale demonstration project led by Shinshu University, the development of visible-light-responsive photocatalysts, and the cutting edge of green hydrogen utilization in local communities through a roundtable discussion with researchers including Professor Domen Kazunari, and a conversation with Iida City Mayor Sato Takeru.
