Macnica provides "Island" to Renaissance High School Group to prevent leaks of students' personal information - Achieving measures against internal fraud while maintaining the operability of a web browser -
Macnica (headquarters: Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture; Representative Director and President: Kazumasa Hara; hereinafter Macnica) announced today that it has provided "Island," an enterprise browser specialized for businesses that offers security and productivity-enhancing features, to the Renaissance High School Group, operated by Broadmedia Corporation (headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and President: Hashimoto Taro; hereinafter "Broadmedia").
■ Background of the introduction
Broadmedia is engaged in the education business, and operates three Renaissance High School Group schools (Renaissance High School, Renaissance Toyota High School, and Renaissance Osaka High School), which are wide-area correspondence high schools where students can learn online using the internet and digital learning materials, as well as 12 campuses in special education zones certified by the Cabinet Office. Feeling a sense of crisis over recent security incidents in the education industry, particularly the leak of students' personal information by internal parties, the company has decided to strengthen its measures against internal fraud.
Although measures such as multi-layered defenses had been implemented against external attacks, the system was insufficient to deal with internal fraud, even though a security policy had been established, and the log collection tool that had been introduced as a post-incident measure was insufficient to protect against malicious data removal. Therefore, in order to protect the personal information of students managed by web applications, SASE, which controls access via the network, was also considered, but it was not possible to adjust detailed control for each application, and there was a risk that it would cause disruption to business operations.
Therefore, we considered security measures for the browsers themselves used to access web applications, which would strengthen measures against internal fraud without disrupting current business operations.
■Reasons for choosing Island
Island is an enterprise browser with features that balance security and productivity. It was highly evaluated for two reasons: it has all the necessary functions to prevent internal fraud, such as file upload/download control, data masking, access control, and checking all browser actions, and it has a Chromium *1 based UI and ease of use that users will not find unfamiliar.
■ Benefits of implementation
The introduction of Island has made it possible to closely monitor activity on business systems that handle student information by checking screenshots, and has made it possible to restrict operations and visualize operation logs. In addition, because it does not require the distribution of agents and its operability is not significantly different from regular browsers, the introduction proceeded smoothly without any confusion on-site.
Island has many built-in security measures built into the browser itself, such as browser isolation, protection from phishing scams, web filtering, malicious code execution, adware *2 removal, and virus protection, so it has been praised for eliminating the need for additional measures to prevent information leaks when working via a browser.

■ Future outlook
Broadmedia plans to increase licenses in the future to accommodate the increase in teachers, administrative staff, and administrators as the educational services division expands. The company is also considering using the analysis of accumulated logs to understand and visualize activity.
Macnica predicts that the importance of enterprise browsers in zero trust will increase in the future due to the shift to cloud computing for business applications and the increasing management burden of VDI. By providing Island, we will contribute to improving the security and productivity of Japanese companies.
