Macnica provides Menlo Security to ROHM with the aim of shifting from perimeter defense to zero trust - sanitizing email and web traffic, and enabling safe and secure web access through SWG -

Macnica (Head office: Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture; Representative Director and President: Kazumasa Hara; hereinafter referred to as Macnica) announced today that it has provided ROHM Co., Ltd. (Head office: Sakyo-ku, Kyoto Prefecture; Representative Director and President: Matsumoto Isao; hereinafter referred to as ROHM) with a gateway product that utilizes Menlo Security's isolation technology. This has enabled the sanitization function to sanitize email and web content, and the Secure Web Gateway (SWG) function to ensure safe and secure web access.

■ Background of the introduction
ROHM, a leading Japanese semiconductor and electronic parts manufacturer, had adopted a "perimeter defense" system that restricted access from outside the company with a firewall and prevented direct access to the Internet, but with the COVID-19 pandemic making it urgent to support remote work, the company decided to distribute laptop PCs to all employees and allow access to the company's internal LAN and the Internet from outside the company. However, delays occurred when connecting from the VPN to the internal LAN, which disrupted business operations, so the company decided to consider improving convenience and strengthening security by building a zero trust network instead of a perimeter defense.

Reasons for adopting Menlo Security
There are two main features of Menlo Security's gateway products that were adopted this time. The first is the email and web sanitization function, which performs a series of web accesses in a secure cloud browser (virtual container) on the cloud and provides convenient sanitization by sending only display information to the client. By using the second SWG function in combination, it is also possible to control actions by category and visualize web access.

In order to open up networks and realize zero trust from 2022, ROHM began to fully consider security products for email and web access based on the Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) established by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). As a result, ROHM evaluated Menlo Security not only for its functionality but also for its proven track record of implementation in many government agencies and large companies, and decided to officially adopt it. In February 2024, the company completed the deployment to all domestic and overseas bases.

<Key points for choosing Menlo Security>
① Highly convenient email and web sanitization function
Liberating the network by increasing security without relying on detection
2) Achieving Zero Trust
Possesses a wide range of portfolio including not only sanitization functions but also SWG functions
3. Extensive implementation track record
More than 270 companies in Japan, with a cumulative total of more than 800,000 users

■ Effects of introduction
At ROHM, over 10,000 users are currently using Menlo Security. By automatically quarantining email attachments and prohibiting file uploads, it effectively prevents external intrusions and internal fraud. In fact, there have been no malware infections, and there has been zero damage caused by downloads from C&C servers.
Security administrators appreciate the peace of mind that comes from having an environment in which users can securely use email and the web. Users also understand that their web access is visible, which helps prevent internal fraud.

■ Future outlook
ROHM will analyze logs obtained from multiple tools, including Menlo Security, to help detect external intrusions, internal fraud, and improve business efficiency. The company also plans to use security features provided by Menlo Security, such as Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB), and Data Loss Prevention (DLP), to reduce costs by reducing duplication with existing products.

Macnica has used the knowledge it has gained as the only Menlo Security primary distributor in Japan to help ensure a smooth implementation. It will continue to use its detailed technical assistance and support capabilities to help strengthen security for Japanese companies, including those in the manufacturing industry.
