Texas Instruments Power Supply: Why should I put a diode between the LDO's In and Out?

power supply

When the LDO's Vin is lower than Vout, reverse current flows inside the LDO. This current conducts the parasitic diode of the internal FET, and the loss may burn out the internal FET.

If Vin is expected to be lower than Vout, install a diode between In and Out or use an LDO with Output-Discharge function.
