If Cyclone III / Cyclone IV has a 10pin header for EPCS programming, are the diodes and capacitors in the Device Handbook required?
According to each Device Handbook, Cyclone III / Cyclone IV requires connecting diodes and capacitors for DATA, DCLK, nCSO, and ASDO signals.
There are two reasons for connecting.
1. FPGA device protection when programming EPCS devices
| When programming pof, the connection of the download cable between the EPCS and FPGA may cause impedance mismatch and induce undershoot/overshoot. |
2. Normal configuration behavior
| By providing a 10-pin header, it becomes more likely that this itself will become an antenna and put noise on each signal line. As a result, there is a considerable possibility that a stable configuration cannot be achieved. To remove this, connect a diode and a capacitor to preserve the signal integrity of the control signal. |
The Device Handbook describes the layout and characteristics of the diodes and capacitors used. Search for the keywords "In-System Programming of Serial Configuration Devices" and see the Notes.
