Even if you delete (Delete) the signal once added to the wave window, it will continue to be saved as a log (wlf) until the simulation ends (End Simulation).
This is probably why it's running slow.
It can be improved by removing the signal of interest from the log using the nolog command.
Example) Command to delete from log
VSIM> nolog -r /example_sim/test_node
Example) Command to return to log
VSIM> nolog -reset
