Intel: There are data_master and instruction_master when connecting Nios® II and Slave peripherals. When should I connect them?

Nios II

Category: Nios® II
Tools: Quartus® Prime (Platform Designer)
device:-

The instruction_master must be connected to the Nios® II processor's instruction code, that is, the ROM (Read Only Memory) that contains the Nios® II processor's software code.
Also, if you copy software code from ROM to random access memory (RAM) and run it from RAM, you also need to connect to the destination RAM.

■ Typical components that connect with instruction_master:

  • Generic Tri-State Controller
  • Legacy EPCS/EPCQx1 Flash Controller
  • Serial Flash Controller
  • Serial Flash Controller II
  • Altera On-Chip Flash (MAX 10 only)
  • On-chip memory
  • SDRAM Controller
  • DDR-SDRAM Controller
  • DDR2-SDRAM Controller
  • DDR3-SDRAM Controller

Such

data_master connects to the Slave component, which plays the role of storing and transferring general data other than the Nios® II processor instruction code and register settings necessary for controlling the Slave component. .

■ Typical components that connect with data_master:

  • PIOs
  • JTAG UART
  • UARTs
  • Components of (1) above (when used as data memory)
