This is due to the default font changed to Intel Clear in Quartus® Prime v16.1.
You can avoid this by changing the font settings.

[procedure]

Select Tools menu ⇒ Options
Select Category ⇒ General ⇒ Fonts
Change Font to Tahoma and click OK
Settings take effect when Quartus® Prime is restarted
